I want a better job. I get about 90-100 bucks a week on the job I am at. The work is hurting my wrists and arms and I can't get extra hours.
What are some tips on getting a second or a better job? I'd love to work at the library, but they are seldom hiring and to make matters more annoying my phone is disconnected.
I fill out applications and go to interviews and get very little luck. It's frustrating.
What can I do? All I need is a second part time job... Or a job that pays more than the one I have now...

I think the things they say about job interviews and so on really do work, to a certain extent. Dress well. Dress for a position higher than the one you seek. Speak clearly. Look people in the eye. Offer a firm handshake. Smile.

Even if you are nervous, pretend to be confident.

Practice. Do lots and lots of interviews to get better at it, and more relaxed. Ask searching questions about the company. How long has it been in business? Who makes the decisions? Is it publically or privately owned? Where does it fit in its particular market and what are the short term and long term goals of the business as a whole? What is their turnover rate?

Let them know you have researched the company and heard good things about it. That you think it will be an excellent place to work.

There is some spark that happens when you really connect with people in an interview. Sometimes it might be a joke that comes up. Or just a real interest in something that's discussed. You can't make it happen but you can just be ready for it and encourage it.

If at all possible try to get your phone reconnected. If you are applying for a part time job that requires no experience, ease of contact becomes a much more important factor in the hiring process.

Depending on where you live, you might try to do light landscaping. If a day care place near you is hiring you might check that out as well. Babysitting is another alternative but you almost have to have a phone for that. You have probably already tried this, but another grocery store or a food service place might also be options, albeit unpleasant ones.

Are you in a town where you know a lot of people? Ask anyone you know if their employer could use a part or full time worker. Apply everywhere you can think of that actually pays people, as long you think you can do the job. Grueling, unenjoyable jobs but also dream jobs that you think you will never get.

You are so lucky. I want to work at B & N. I applied there over the summer but my phone was cut off so I never found out if I got the job... shelving or not.
Shelving would be so sweet. Better than bagging. [Frown]

Shelving at a bookstore would actually be a really good job. It's very relaxing. Or at least, shelving at a library was, and I imagine they'd be similar.

Could you make another run to all the bookstores in your town, and ask to speak with the manager when you go in? You could explain your phone situation and your real enthusiasm for a job shelving, and ask if they have any positions. And be super confident and friendly. Tell them you'd be happy to start tomorrow if they have an opening.

I bet those jobs open up all the time! Good luck!

What was that quote? "The world stands back for the man who knows what he wants"? Something like that. If you walk into a store knowing exactly what you want and exuding confidence that they want you to have it, then you're set. [Smile]

There are no bookstores in this town, but there's one in Braintree so I will go there and ask someone about that.
I got another eviction notice. First of the year... Freaked me out thoroughly. The money isn't even a problem because I can pay it in less than two weeks. [Frown]

Actually, it is difficult to get a job at B&N, one lady there now, applied 13, yes, 13 times to get a job there. [Eek!] The thing is, once we finally get hired, we NEVER leave.

Synth, my suggestion is to go to a temp agency. That's where I got mine recently, and I've been pretty happy with it. Try to get into doing customer service. With the right company it can be fun and the work doesn't require any heavy lifting...

Luckily, I'm a long-term temp meaning I'm working through September. I've never had a job that guaranteed me a place to work for that long before.
