What a cool name for a band! I caught them first on MTV on a special for cover bands. DC covers REM and they do an excellent job. So excellent in fact, that Michael Stipes even joined them on 2 tracks! I took a chance and downloaded their covers from iTunes and I am very pleased!

Speaking of iTunes, does anyone else use it? I have 1022 songs, 2.9 days of consecutive music, and 2.89 Gigs of data on my harddrive. And it makes me so so happy.

Dashboard Confessional sounds like REM just not as good IMO.

Dashboard doesn't resemble REM at all. I can stomach Dashboard. THey ARE a little whiney, but I still really like them.

I agree Ni and their cover of Everybody Hurts really sails. I especially love the "Honky Tonky" bright timbre of the piano at the opening of the song, and it carries throughout.

I am listening through their EP as we speak, and again, if you like REM, then DC is a nice spin on their work.

Do they do originals too or are they just a tribute band?

As far as original work, I have not seen any listed. They were featured on some MTV special (which I do not watch very often) that covered cover bands. iTunes has 5 of their tracks for downloading, including an exclusive, but they are all REM covers.

Dash is basically just one guy, Christopher Ender Carraba-- and yes he's read the books and loved them, even has one song sorta dedicated to Ender's Game called 'Ender Will Save Us All' - though the song doesn't portray the story at all, there's a story that goes with it, and he had a friend he shared Ender's Game with and talked to and everything about it, and whenever crap tore them apart, talking about Ender's Game helped fix things again-- anyway, Carraba's newer works he's actually with a group, I like it, but i'm still a fan of his older stuff-- Dash is my favorite, I realize it may be a bit whiny at points and such- but it happens to be soothing to me.. So, yah- y'should check'em out.

Excellent info Pepek! Another reason why Hatrack should start its own think tank due to the horrendously high amount of intelligence lurking within.

We could be great.

Just to open myself to loads of ridicule and scorn, I'm going to reveal just how out-of-date I am.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about THIS.

A little? I can't think of any music that's whinier.

The guy breaks out in tears about 2/3 through each song. You can tell when his voice changes.

The only song by Dashboard that I like is "Hands Down." The lyrics are just so amazing. They make me all sappy.

For those that are still wondering, Dashboard is most certainly not a "tribute band." (And for reasons explained by Pepek, I use the term "band" rather loosely.)

At first most of the music was Carraba moaning about how emotionally abused he is by girls. The most recent CD (A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar) seems to indicate that he has moved on somewhat. It isn't as angsty, but it's still pretty good.

My favorite DC song: "The Sharp Hint of New Tears."

A friends wife introduced me to DC last year. I like they're stuff when I'm in the mood for it. A couple of my other friends listened to it and called it suicide music, the perfect stuff to listen to if you feel like killing yourself...

i was a fan a few years back. i think its an age thing. once i reached 20 i just couldn't relate anymore. now Bright Eyes i can still dig. also sounds like the singer is crying during every song.

iTunes is musical crack for me. The majority of the songs I imported from my CD collection and have only downloaded about 60-70.

Thanks for the info on DC. I was surprised by the lead singer's middle name and found that fact to be strangely fitting for Hatrack!

The reason DC does NOT resemble REM is the lack of real guitar playing in DC

Actually, that's just a thinly veiled "guitar work needs to be technical in every way in every song EVER" statement. And REM guitar, from what I've noticed, isn't technical in the sense that it's so far removed from guitar in Dashboard.

Now, maybe "the guitar tone is different," or "Michael Stipe doesn't really sound like Chris" could work. In fact, that's pretty much why I think Dashboard doesn't really sound like REM.

that is incorrect sir. Actually, what I am referring to is the use of guitar for melody/harmony - a tune if yuo will, as opposed to just chord changes. And it does not have to be every song, but when every song DOESN'T have it, then, in my opinion, it is a problem. REM does not use the guitar for a melody in every song, but at least there is a variety there, and that there is some skill in Peter Buck allowing him to actually do something beyond simple chord progressions.
