Are there any dance-impaired people other than me? How do you learn to dance, when the "move to the music" thing doesn't work?

Yes.

You don't. You give your partner an excuse to sit down, or hop up and down with your legs close together and hobble to the bathroom.

Dude, just grab a colored friend and ask her -- it's going to be a her -- to teach you. And if you're like me, you'll need new lessons every six months to keep from looking like a dancing bear.

Of course, if you're like me, you'll end up looking like a dancing bear anyway, but...

I only dance when I'm drunk.

Actually, I just stagger around the dance floor until I fall down or throw up, but I like to call it dancing.

Nononono....you don't get a round of applause in these meetings, you get a collective,

"HI DANIEL!"

That said, I'm going to a different meeting, because I can dance. [Smile]

The big trick to dancing is to not care that you look like an idiot. Embrace the inner idiot, and enjoy.

edit: I am completely serious about this.

Swing dancing I'm decent at.

Slow dancing I'm also decent at, because I can apply some of my swing dancing moves to it.

Normal dancing I suck at.

I am dancing impaired. My younger sister once described it as something akin watching me get electrified.

Also -- re: Lalo's "dancing bear" comment. For a moment, I was truly perplexed. I paused and said to myself, "But that means somebody who's unusually deft at getting out of scrapes ... oh. Oops."

*headdesk*

(Issib and Nafai are *not* giving me language lessons. Nosiree.)

*raises hand* I'm dancing impaired. I don't really try though. I've only been to about three school dances. The closest I come is when I sway or tap to the beat.

Exactly. Dance as if no one is watching.

I car dance, especially to the classic rock station. Get's some weird looks from passers-by, but it's fun and helps pass the time on long drives.

Pfft. Mosh pits aren't about survival. Mosh pits are about running into random people and not caring when you fall on your butt. [Razz] People pick you up again, anyway....

That said, I can't dance. Unless I've had a few drinks, in which case, I still can't dance, but I stop caring so much about my utter lack of coordination.

Edit: Another mosh pit benefit - you can get people to swing you around by the arms like when you were a little kid. [Big Grin]

The truth is, no one is watching you. Maybe your little sister, but I swear that's it. Just enjoy yourself.

Of course, the very moment that you believe that, the girl has a video camera and an internet uplink. ;-)

I think that my problem with dancing isn't necessarily that I think everybody is watching me, though. I think that it's because I'm just plain bad. Thankfully, it runs in my family. I have a vivid memory of my youngest brother, at the age of four, breakdancing. However, the boy was inclined to seizures, and I ran forward help him!

Thanks for the welcome, everybody. I have this huge, huge feeling that I perhaps should have lurked for ages before actually posting, but -- *waves*

::raises hands in air::

::touch fingers to thumbs 4 times::

::bring hands into arm pits::

::lift elbows up and down 4 times::

::wiggle butt to the left and right while going downward for 4 beats::

::stand up and clap 4 times::

And now you know as much as I do about dancing.

We're definitely doing the chicken dance at my wedding. It's a tradition!
No Hokey-Pokey though - I went to UVa and they'll be no Virginia Tech nonesense there.

The Funky Chicken is an entirely different dance all together. This is just The Chicken Dance.

The interpretive dance, from what I remember, actually HAD the Chicken Dance in it.

Therefore, I do not. I just oggle.

I've got soul. And rhythm. Neither feeds into my dance skills. Then again, I haven't danced sober since high school.

You could always take dance lessons. Or play a musical instrument, something that lets you get more involved with the music than you do just by listening to it. It'll help you "feel" the music more.

Of course, as a white male I think any advice I have is immediately suspect.

I'm a good dancer. I just don't know what to do with nonchoreographed dances. I "just move" for maybe half a minute tops, and then get bored and sit down. It is not that I feel uncomfortable or cannot dance-I just get bored. *shrug*

I'm a horrible, horrible dancer. Hideous. That whole "no one is watching you" business? It's a lie. If they weren't watching, they wouldn't know to point and laugh.

::has actually had this experience::

Welcome to Hatrack, karen.elizabeth! Don't worry about not having lurked--diving in works just fine.

Ladies, how do you teach a dude how to lead? We're standing there and I'm saying, "Okay, good, but YOU are supposed to be carrying ME around. Just GO."

We stand there, or he starts the moving but I end up taking over. I say, "Do what I'm doing, only backwards, and to me."

We stand there.

It's impossible, I have no idea what to do.

And YES I'm sure there are umpteen ways to put this in OOC but I'm too tired to fix it. Time to go resurrect my thread.
