It may not mean much of anything to any of you, but it is really big news here in Wichita today that BTK Has Come Back.

BTK was a serial killer in Wichita in the 1970's. He was responsibile for several killings. Then suddenly the killings stopped. The killer was never identified or located. He liked to send letters to media to take credit for his work. (BTK stood for Bind, Torture and Kill).

There have been rumors for years that he must have died, or went to prison, or moved, or whatever.

But now either him, or a very good copycat, is contacting media again.

It is all very fascinating. I was in high school during his rounds of killing, and I remember all the media attention at the time.

Richard Mark Evonitz haunted my area during high school. Serial child-rapist and murderer.

It was frightening. Two of the girls who were killed lived next door to some friends of ours. Then he just disappeared.

He was found later in South Carolina, and wound up killing himself.

The sense of relief in the community was palpable.

The sniper shootings here in Northern VA and in Maryland and DC were worse -- everyone was on edge, everyone was paranoid. No one wanted to be outside, or go to restaurants. I felt absolutely uncomfortable filling up my gas tank.

I was very glad when they caught them.

EDIT: Realized that Richard Paul Evans should be what I changed it to above. :ashamed:
