Am I the only one who sits around wondering, where did we get the ideas for all this food? Chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, salisbury steak and all sorts of complicated dishes. Where did they come from? How could we have gone from hunting and gathering to ice cream!?

I suspect a lot of recipes, especially early ones, came about because of "accidents" like the chocolate chip cookies, or through experimentation (maybe, "Hey, what do you think would happen if we heated eggs?").

Here's one that's always been one of my favorite:
quote: INVENTION OF THE POTATO CHIP:
While dining at Moon's Lake House, Saratoga Springs, New York, a finicky patron repeatedly returned his order of french fried potatoes. Chef George Crum became enraged, sliced some of the potatoes paper-thin, returned the plate to the guest, who loved them, and the potato chip was born.
The story I heard a long time ago had a bit more detail (that the patron complained that the fries were too thick, and...other things that I can't remember). Here's the link where I found that bit, though.
