We have to write speeches for my Speech Communication class, and I don't like the topic my teacher gave us. The speech we just gave was on gay marriage, which was fine. But this one is on the war in Iraq and I don't want to have to write and deliver a speech on that. My teacher said that if we can come up with a better topic, we can use it. The only restrictions are that it must be a real topic, and it must have two clear sides. That means it can't be something like, "Should hall passes be allowed?" because obviously everyone would say yes. Also, it's better if it's something that's been in the news recently (or at least in the past few years) so that the class will already be somewhat familiar with it. Anyone have any suggestions for a good topic?

Gay Penguins.

Should they be allowed to have abortions?

I think the real question is: How do gay penguins get pregnant in the first place?

As great as that penguin topic is, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Does Complete Capitalism work? See the Communism thread.

EDIT: Well, it fits all your criteria except the one about a recent issue thing. And it's a far cry from "should hall passes be allowed?"

The important question is whether or not it's even possible for an animal that lays eggs to have an abortion.

I assume you aren't looking for the more obvious topics (death penalty, legalization of drugs - many teachers probably wouldn't allow that as a topic).

A few I had brainstormed for my speech class:
Mandatory volunteer work in High School;
File-sharing over the internet;
Driver's ed requirements (I know, it sounds dumb, but some states have very loose requirements compared to others);
Stem cell research (kinda overdone in my opinion).

All I remember right now. If I'm way off base with what you are looking for, then ... oops.

Teshi- that would be a great topic, except that this class isn't for any specific level (meaning anyone can take it), and most of my class wouldn't know what capitalism is.

Chungwa- those are good topics. I'll think about a couple of those.

Yeah, when I read your post again I guessed that perhaps Capitalism wasn't what you were looking for...

Might I ask what level most of the students in the class are in? Just out of curiosity. When I was in grade 11 I was shocked to find that most of my social studies 20 class didn't know the main differences between capitalism and socialism.

Should releases from liability executed by parents on behalf of their minor child bar the child from recovering for negligence?

For example, a children's sports league requires parents to sign a release that says the league will not be liable for injuries, even if caused by the league's negligence.

There's a lot of good arguments on both sides.

What kind of role should the US government have in the removal of dicators? You could use Aristade here, instead of Saddam Hussien, and that might make it more interesting

My class has about 12 kids in it, mostly seniors with a few juniors (me). If it makes a difference there are only four boys. The rest of us are girls. I don't know if that makes much of a difference, except that all of the males were very uncomfortable with the topic of gay marriage. Especially when one girl brought in a poster with two guys kissing. They pretty much freaked out.

I don't know what grade you're in but here are some that I've done with secondary age students (usually ages 12-15):

This house would pay everyone the same
This house believes that computers can think
This house would make the Beckhams the new Royal Family (slightly British-centred, but funny)
This house believes that Hollywood shouldn't do history (focused on war films eg Enigma and Saving Private Ryan)
This house would abandon SATs
This house would abolish private schools

Such a paper is pretty much a bluff. You cannot give up your right to litigate in this country, wavers notwithstanding.

Was Aristede considered a dictator? I remember when he was elected . . . Did his regime become tyranical, or merely unsuccessful?

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm going to do stem cells and whether there should be federal funding, etc.
