My Olympus D series digital camera is biting the dust. I need a new camera fairly quickly, since we have a lot of things coming up that we will want to document with snapshots.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Under $400 (I'm not a professional photographer and I'm not going to spend a thousand bucks on a camera)

Fairly durable

Water resistant a plus, we'd like to be able to take it hiking

Rechargeable battery - I'm tired of chewing up AA batteries

Pretty idiot proof, I'm no photographic genius

Will mainly be used for family snapshots, some outdoor pics on hiking trips, nothing major. I'm looking in the 3 megapixel range, which will allow enlargements up to 8x10 with decent quality.

Any suggestions? I'd kinda like to stay away from Olympus, they've disappointed me in this one.

My mom just got some kind of Kodak Easyshare thingie. No idea what it costs or if it's waterproof, but I think it's really cool. It's easy to use.

Edit: Looking at it, it's a Kodak EasyShare DX6440 and has 4.0 mega pixels.

the sony cameras in that range in particular should be pretty good. I'd suggest writing down a half dozen names that look like they have the basic features you want, then reading reviews to see what people who've used them think.

I like the Canon powershot cameras, they're really nice (and have very nice lenses for cameras of their size). They're also coming out with the new ELPH series ones that are especially small like this one:

they're not waterproof, but they'll handle a hike as long as you don't jump into the river...
The thing is they use special batteries, but the nice thing about the batteries is that they're rechargable and last for a long time.

See, I don't like the really tiny ones! I have trouble getting my paws to fit on all the buttons.

The Non-elph ones are larger (but still small enough that it's not ungangly) and slightly cheaper, and still uber-awesome.
the POWERSHOT-A310 3.2 Megapixel Digital Camera is rather nice, and like most Canons it'll do 3 minutes of video (with sound) as well...and the video comes out rather well.
