Maybe someone else can use it.

Yes, Mama hacked off her hair. She's had long hair since before I met her (1991), but she decided on Friday that she'd like to donate it, and went out Saturday and had it sliced off. I think she's ok, but I'm still recovering from the trauma.

No, she looks fantastic with shoulder-length hair (like I even have the ability, much less desire, to think she doesn't), albeit different. I can run my fingers through her hair now without them getting caught on a tangle, which is nice. And Superstation can't reach it to pull any more, which is also a plus. So it's a good thing, we all agree.

Besides, it'll grow back.

That's awesome. My wife has done that a couple of times as well. One of the stylists in the area will do the cut for free if she is willing to part with at least 10 inches. So it's a bargain all around. Personally, I think my wife looks pretty cute with shoulder-length hair.

Yay for Mama! I've had friends that have donated their hair to Locks of Love. I wish I could stand having my hair longer than my shoulders, so it could get long enough to donate... But it just makes me too crazy - I got my shoulder-length hair chopped off last week, so now it's short!

I second the request for pictures.

[obligatory "glad this isn't an onanism thread" remark]

Cool! I did that once, but it was only like 8 inches, I think.

I'm currently on a hair-growing streak, since my Beloved missed the cloud of dark brown locks I used to have.

But it does grow back, and will probably be even fuller (I lost some hair after the first pregnancy, and had a bunch grow in short and curly all over my head. Shortenning it decreased the weirdness [Wink] )

I'm with rivka! i wanna see Mama Squirrel's new 'do!

My daughter has beautiful strawberry blond hair. When she was a senior in high school, it was below her waist and very eye-catching. She decided to donate it to locks of love. I tried to talk her out of it, since her hair was so beautiful, but she went ahead and did it (I cried all day when she told me). The ladies at the salon were wonderful, and cut and styled her hair for free when she told them she wanted to donate it. They said that it usually takes 3 or 4 "donations" to make a wig, but hers was enough all by itself. She's never regretted the decision.

And she's still beautiful with shorter hair.

Sorry I don't have any "before" shots -- I'll find something recent and attempt to get our scanner working again. But here's a few shots of the short-haired version of Mama.

She's considering getting a perm, but there's only so much change I can take in a short time, so she's going to wait.

My hair doesn't get longer than the middle of my back anyway, but if it did, I like the idea of donating it.

I have noticed that my hair gets a lot longer when I only rarely wear it down. I have my hair up in clips, a twist, or a ponytail every day for work, and every once in a while I'm shocked by how long it's getting.

My friend Carissa got a semi-professional cut from Yours Truly a couple of weeks ago, and we had to cut it pretty short to meet the length requirement for Locks of Love. It looks pretty good.

I cut off about 18 inches once, but I wasn't able to donate it, because my beauty-man cut my hair in chunks instead of one long tail. I wish I had known that I had the option to donate it sometime BEFORE five minutes after they swept my hair away. Jes had his hair cut too...we will be sending it in shortly. (Fourteen inches of luscious, curly locks.)

She'll be amazed at how much less shampoo -- and TIME -- it will take to wash it. Not to mention drying time!

I've been thinking of doing this, but I'm not sure my hair is quite long enough. I think it might be, so whin it gets hot enough to not want all this hair I'll head over to the salon and ask.

Oh my gosh! *gaspchoke* I didn't see the link to the after shots of Mama, so I thought all the people saying how she looked great didn't actually click the Locks of Love link and assumed that's what it was for. HAHAHA!! Sorry. [Big Grin]

And she looks really cute with her hair in the headband thingy...I love those so much.

Yay! I think donating hair is a wonderful thing to do! My younger sister has hair that grows like crazy and she's donated 12 inches three times in her life (she's only 21)

Mama Squirel - you look great with short hair! You'll love it!

I don't know If I'd donate it...My hair doesn't really grow fast... I think I would, but when its lower than my waist, I've always wanted to have hair that long, and for some reason or another, I just can't do so.

Work has been busy so I didn't see this until now. I actually took my hair out of the ziploc and measured it before mailing it. It is actually 13 inches. Thank you for all the encouragement (not quite sure how I feel about being called "cute" when I am 31 years old). I do think I need to get some pictures of Pop up on Foobonic. Notice how he has avoided that so far? Of course, now he will probably change our password so I can't do it.

I think SS knows that Pop is avoiding a landmark. I do happen to know he is working on it (last I heard he was on page 4). He just needs encouragement to actually post it.

Not avoiding it... I just hadn't finished it yet. I think I have, but I'm gonna re-read it now and see if I left off anything I wanted to say, or said anything I didn't want to. Also, I don't think landmark avoidance is why SS said what he did.

Also, it should be noted that I said twelve inches, when it was actually thirteen. Let it not be said that all men exaggerate when it comes to size.

I had hair down to my waist and last summer cut probably about 18-24 inches off (forgot the measure [Wall Bash] ).

Now it's growing again and when it gets back to my waist in a few years, I'll do it again. I like knowing that some kid is benefitting from something I did.

I have rather long hair for a guy (and at my age too, which shall remain un-announced) that is thinning (thinning? Its damn near gone) on top. It falls to about the midway mark on my back. When the top is finally gone, I will be having the rest cut and donated to one of the wig places that makes hair pieces for cancer patients.

Connie-
Topping your previous coolness was tough, but I think you've done it.

As an aside- my best friend, Maria, has been having a very sad time lately. I've been searching for ways to lift her spirits. I told her about you donating your hair and had her read Pop's landmark post. She was uplifted by your gift and cried at Pop's post. She's taking home a copy to share with her family.

Yours and Pop's generous spirit did not remove her sadness, her Dad just died, but it gave a wonderful example of what is still good and vibrant and faithful in this world. It helps make this life a place she wants to inhabit. Thank you.

Not long ago I had at least that much cut off of my hair. I should have donated it. But it was such a spontaneous decision, I didn't think about it until afterwards. [Frown]
