Yeah, Annie, I said "recs" instead of "reccommendations." I didn't do it to tick you off. Probably because I feel too crappy at the moment to look it up. Sue me.
But what I mean is... we usually have threads about what's a good book, good TV show, good or overlooked movies, movies so bad they were good, etc.
When CT came to visit, she mentioned that she had seen The Wicker Man after I had a thread about it ("Woad is Me" I think. I just love making up goofy titles). I had no idea she'd seen it because I had reccommended it, what she'd thought of it, etc. And we talk frequently.
So I thought it might be fun to take the time to tell folks what we've read or watched because of their suggestions, and what we thought of them.
I'll go first.
Irami suggested, ages ago, that I read Game of Thrones. I was nearly through it when I had to give it back to the Library, and it has been out ever since. *sigh* But I have to admit he (among the many others) was right. I loved it.
Several Hatrack Ladies suggested I read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, saying it was a 'time travel/fantasy /romance'. I looked for it and ran screaming from the bookstore when I saw it was shelved on the 'romance' isle. But I eventually caved and got it the library. I'm so glad I did. Thank you.
Pod got me to rent Princess Mononoke, which we now own and cherish.
The many rabid Firefly fans got me into one of the best scifi TV shows ever. Ditto Farscape.
Porcelain girl made me realize I HAD to see Moulin Rouge, which in turn led to my Ewan McGregor obsession, which led to my plans for world domination... erm. Anyway, THANKS!
Those are all I can think of at the moment. Who's next?

I read many books on Hatrackomendation. I read "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn," and am about to begin "A Game of Thrones."
I got a great mixed cd from Sue Malmrose, and learned about some new music.
I have had numerous health questions answered, as well as diet and exercise discussions which have helped me a lot.

I tried watching "Game Over". It didn't seem worth it to dig up the thread to give my feedback, which is that I didn't think it was that funny. I plan to read some of Card's early standalone novels someday. If I can find any.

I got into Ocatvia Butler because of rivka - and I am so glad I did.
I will be going to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because of various reviews here (plus I like Charlie Kaufmann).
Oh, I read Microserfs as a hatrack suggestion. That was fun.
Someone else also got me to read the Anita Blake series (I'm too lazy to go get the thread and see who did) - I liked those too. However, I've moved and my new library doesn't stock them. Gah.
It's mostly books I think - though I have been inspired to make biscuits and gravy by a food thread.

The thing is, I like them - I just can't justify buying them.
Firstly because I know I'll be laughed at when my literary snob friends come around. I shouldn't care but.... I do.
And secondly Tony and I are trying to save up for a house, so luxeries like books are only bought rarely and for special treats - or when we are in airports.
So any books that I can live without owning, I don't buy. This worked brilliantly last year, when we lived a 10 minute walk away from The Best Library in the Whole Wide World.
But now we've moved back to the state of the sucky libraries - not doing so well.

My librarian sister-in-law got an advance copy of the new faerie book by LKH. She's the one who let me have a couple of them that she got for free because of paperback donations to the libraries. I consider them sort of a guilty pleasure. Not a lot of style or craftmanship, but still oddly compelling.
In Anime, I just started watching Gundam Wing, and I absolutely LOVE it. I hope I'll get the next dvd from Netflix today. *crosses fingers*
That was rec'd on Hatrack before, though I admit I started watching it because my brother-in-law (Ron's youngest brother who he works with, not the one married to the librarian) brought the first two dvds over.
He also put me onto X, which is beautiful, inscruatble and melodramatic-- kind of everything I like about Anime. *snicker*

I've actually made lists (on my computer) of different books that Hatrackers have recommended in some thread or another.
It is a very LONG list, and I don't know how many of them I will actually get read, but it is nice to have it when I want something to read and have no idea which book would be good..
..and I work just a block from the main public library...

Based on Hatrack recommendations, I've read George Martin, Spider Robinson and Neil Gaiman and loved them all. Especially Martin.
I tried Pratchett, but didn't like him. It was Colour of Magic that I read, and I've heard that isn't one of his best, so maybe I'll try a different one.
