So wired had a link to an article in the Washington Post. This article's title i think pretty clearly states what is so simultaneously insane and disturbing about the patriot act:
i understand that law enforcement enjoys having broad sweeping powers, such as the ability to detain people, search without proving just cause for months, tap communications lines and such, but this really does highlight why the patriot act needs to go. It's far far too powerful, and there isn't recourse to do anything about it.
The USA was supposed to be based on freedom and transparency, and while the Bush administration was disturbingly opaque when they first came into office (which really makes giving them such broad powers that much disturbing), the extent to which the US government has become totally disconnected from the oversight of the public has gone far far too far.

Be careful of the opinions you post here is all I can say. Maybe I will never post again unless I am at a net cafe or library with no cameras. Scary.
