In hanging my wet laundry on the line, I realized I had erred in a significant fashion.

One end of the line is hooked to the side of my house.

The other is hooked to a tree that grew at least six inches since last spring.

Unfortunately, I have not grown taller in proportion to this tree.

Wait. I'm confused. No matter how much the tree grows, the parts that are already there should stay where they are. E.g., if you nail a sign to a tree, in twenty years the sign will not be any higher than it was originally.

So what happened?

Yeah, that doesn't work, the tree grows out, in rings, not up.

The end that is attached to the tree is attached to the trunk of the tree.

Trees do grow taller, from seedling to sapling to full grown.

(Unless some jokester has rearranged the hook. Or I've grown shorter.)

Nope - no additional holes and I've not shrunk.

God's idea of a joke?
