No, this is NOT a hockey thread. I've tricked you in here to talk about the paranormal. That means "weird stuff" for the laypeople out there.

I don't know why, but this kind of thing has always interested me. Then I just read this article on The Jersey Devil and I found it intriuging. There are a lot of these mythical beasts out there: Chupacabra, Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, the Mothman, and the Devil.

I've never seen any of them, but I have occasionally heard strange noises in the woods at night. And that always gets my imagination running. What if there are these "monsters" out there, but we've just never found any of them?

Are they all just figments of peoples' imaginations or hoaxes, or is there any truth in them? Has anyone on Hatrack every seen one of them?

Am I completely alone in my interest, or does anyone else believe in these guys too? Or, am I just a weirdo? (Which may or may not have anything to do with the other questions. [Big Grin] )

One that you forgot to mention was Skin Walkers. Living here in the desert south west, I've heard a few stories, one of which scared the bajeebies out of me.

As to what's real or what's not, I have no idea.

Here's a great article on the Mothman. I swear, this stuff is just addicting. Even if it's not true, it makes for good stories.

What are the skinwalkers? Do tell.

Shape shifters. Evil medicine men.

I cannot go into greater detail now, I've got to leave for home, but a google search ought to pull up a bit of info...

If this thread stays alive for awhile, I'll try to find time to tell the story I heard.

I'm not so sure that I believe in these things enough to be able to rationalize even an ounce of my belief but I do believe just enough to get the creeps every time I here some of these stories.

...Of course, with the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, I just laugh. But otherwise I'll at least listen to the stories if for no other reason than they make good hearing and it's interesting to hear what others believe in.

Crow Augury.

One crow for sorrow.

My husband and I were at a funeral this winter. As we waited in the cemetary for the line of cars to settle and park, we looked over on the lawn. A single raven was standing about thirty feet from us. He looked right at us and repeatedly cawed. Not a raspy caw like most ravens, but a clear call. He was definitely talking to us. (They are VERY smart birds)

Well, the guy who had passed away, Steve's cousin's grandfather, was a cocky, funny, highly intelligent man. He was not previously ill, but got meningitis, went into a coma, and died.

Meanwhile, his great grandson, a baby with Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome, miraculously recovered the day of his funeral.

Kinda had us thinking.

Liz

Don't forget the tragic story of "La Lloranda", spirit of La Frontera (the Border). Many versions, most of which start with a lady who loses her children to the Rio Grande. She is a spirit who cries, banshee-like. Sometimes they say she threw her children in the river herself, over a man, or to escape La Migra (immigration).

Very sad.

Do I believe it?

Not usually.

Back home in Connecticut all the highschool kids take trips to a cemetary in Burlington to see the "Green Lady". Typical murder story behind the woman. It was said she was either killed and thrown in a nearby swampy area or got lost and died there.
So, now she'll appear at night as a green translucent woman just standing and looking at the road. I never saw her, but it is creepy and I know several people who have sworn to seeing her.

Ok, do not laugh, but I swear we had something in the paranormal realm going on in our last house. We had one room which always made me feel uncomfortable, and it seemed that sometimes at night I heard noises coming from there. One night while my husband was gone and the kids and I were in bed I heard the door-stopper in that room being hit - a sound you cannot imagine. Who knows what it could have been, and I have to admit that I'm a big chicken normally, but that totally creeped me out.

I claim the bigfoot title.

Size 15 shoes.

And, for the record, I've been called both bigfoot and sasquatch by entirely different groups of people.

Celia is a yeti.

Yep, I was right:

quote:
The chupacabra ("goat sucker") is an animal said to be unknown to science and systemically killing animals in places like Puerto Rico and Mexico. The creature's name originated with the discovery of some dead goats in Puerto Rico with puncture wounds in their necks and their blood allegedly drained. According to UFO Magazine (March/April 1996) there have been more than 2,000 reported cases of animal mutilations in Puerto Rico in the last two years attributed to the chupacabra.

Puerto Rican authorities maintain that the deaths are due to attacks from groups of stray dogs or other exotic animals, such as the panther, illegally introduced in the island's territory. The director of Puerto Rico's Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services Division, Hector Garcia, has stated that there is nothing unusual or extraordinary about the cases they've observed. One veterinarian said "it could be a human being who belongs to a religious sect, even another animal. It could also be someone who wants to make fun out of the Puerto Rican people."

You can read the whole thing here.
