I'm having a problem with my cd RW. It won't burn any cds! Instead I get a whole slew of errors such as medium not present and drive not ready and cannot perform fixation.
What do I do?

Syn,

Did you just recently install this CD-RW drive? Have you ever used it before -- and it is just now giving you errors? Give us a little background, please.

I've had it in my computer for that last 2 or 3 years. It never started giving me trouble until yesterday. It plays my cds and mp3s but I keep consistently getting this error and I'm not sure if it's the discs or the drive... I always use Maxell and they've never given me trouble before.

Would it be too much trouble to have you post the exact wording of the error messages you're getting when you try to burn?

Well, the "medium not present" certainly means it isn't seeing the writable disk you put in there at all. I'm assuming you've already tried several CDs, though, right? and it doesn't see any of them. Are they all from the same package?

Well, that sounds as if your burner is messed up. I'm sorry to say. I would maybe try cleaning the lens if you have a CD Lens Cleaner.

It's a longshot, but it might work. If not, you might have to buy a new one. The ball bearings and motor just went out in my DVD rom 2 weeks ago, and mine is 3 years old. Something like this is not unheard of.

You can try shaking your fists at it.

Shaking fists always works for me.

Syn, same thing happened to me last year. I just tossed it, and bought another one for 30 bucks and it hasn't given me any trouble since.

Syn,

Sorry I got called away to do actual work today, so didn't get to follow up after my first couple of posts.

Does sound like something wrong with your writer. Even though it reads CDs fine doesn't mean that the writer part isn't broke.

Probably you will have to look at replacing it, as others have already told you.
