I'm using a Windows machine for the first time in the better part of a decade. I've got a weird type problem.
If I try to type an apostrophe or quotes, I'll hit the apostrophe key with or without the shift key. It doesn't matter what program it's in.
When I hit the apos key, nothing happens until I type another letter or hit the space bar. Then, it usually appears along with the letter I've typed.
Occaisonally, usually with the shift-key for quotes, and dependent on the following letter that I strike, it'll create modifed western characters - umlauts, greves, graves, accents etc.
Now I'm used to this behaviour on my Mac - the option key can perform this function, but it seems like it's on all the time on my PC...

Heh, my parents' pc does that, but I've never used it long enough to be bothered figuring out how to fix it, so I'd be interested to know why it does that as well. It is rather irritating. Posts: 1431 | Registered: Aug 2003

Yeah - that's my question -- is this is Word, or Outlook or in all programs that you type in? Have you tried typing in just Wordpad or Notepad to see if it does it there?

It's all good farmgirl, I was already on that path when I read your little gem..... I just hadn't restarted my machine, which after changing the Keyboard settings fixed the issue!

Okay -- on a Windows XP operating system, here is where those settings are found:
CONTROL PANEL REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS LANGUAGES tab at the top DETAILS button It should say something at the bottom half like: English Keyboard US Highlight the US and hit "add" and see if it is specifying "United States - Dvorak" keyboard.
