Besides me, I mean? I'm heading to Harrisonburg, VA, for a corporate training, and will be spending the weekend there. Sadly, Christy can't come.
Since I'll be flying in and out of Dulles -- despite a two hour drive, it's really the only nearby major airport -- I'll be in D.C., as well. If anybody's around, I'd love to get coffee or something.

Assuming this is the 8th, it's my first weekend home after the semester, so I have no idea what's going on. But my fiance is always up for coffee, so I'll check with her and let you know.

You know, if you'd been one weekend earlier, I would have met up with you. (My office is about 6 miles from Dulles) I'm working weekend nights, and it would have been a cinch to pop into the city.
Alas, I don't go any further north than Dale City on the weekends unless I'm working.

So if your training is in VA, are you planning to drive up to DC on the weekend? Sat or Sun? or both? What would you like to see/do there?

I'd absolutely love to get together. I may have to bring a friend along to set the parents' minds at ease, though, if it's not too awkward.
Also, since there've been more than a few offers, perhaps the whole group could get together and then take Tom somewhere? There are so many amazing places around here, many of them without entrance fees, so we may as well take advantage of them, no? If so, any ideas? The obvious ones are the many museums but how about the tidal basin? Are the cherry blossoms still out?

If there are any cherry blossoms left by today, they will surely be gone by the 8th. All the cherry blossoms around Baltimore have fallen, and the crab-apple blossoms are blowing across the parking lot even as I type.
If Tom is of a horticultural mind, I'd suggest Dunbarton Oaks in Georgetown. But there are also tons of museums as was already stated, and literally hundreds of great restaurants in the area. Some of what we do might depend on the weather, too.

I've been to D.C. a few times before, and have done most of the traditional tourism -- but I haven't seen the WWII memorial, and am intrigued by it (if only to see how it changes the nature of the space). I used to date a girl at GWU, so I'm also marginally familiar with that campus.

So what do you want to do in DC? I'll take you to the WWII memorial, if you want, but I imagine that won't take too long.

I'll leave myself in your capable hands, guys. The weekend's best for me, because it's a four-hour roundtrip from Harrisonburg on the weekdays and I'm still SUPPOSED to attend the training.

I'm busy all through the week with school so the weekend's best for me as well and sometime on Saturday sounds perfect. Maybe some touring and a meal (either lunch or dinner since Kasie mentioned the afternoon)?
In any event, so far we've got the WWII memorial and... what else? I think KarlEd was right in that that alone won't take very long so we ought to come up with something else to do and then somewhere we could all go to eat.

I'll be around, though I probably won't be able to do anything in the mornings.
One idea would be the National Arboretum (sp?). It has a lot of walking trails and is a great place for a picnic. The only problem is that it's really only accessible by car or bike.

I don't entirely know what my schedule will be like next weekend, but I'd like to try to meet up if I can.

We should probably organize this somehow. Tom said he's not particular about what to do and can play it by ear. That being the case, we should probably pick a meeting place and time at least, where everyone can get together.
I'm willing to coordinate (unless someone else wants to. )

OK, who officially is interested? Tom told me he isn't very familiar with the area, so I suggest we pick a landmark that will be easy to meet at. I, myself can't be in DC until about 11:00 AM or so, so if people want to meet earlier, that's fine but I'd have to hook up with you somewhere at 11. Parking in DC is terrible. It might be more convenient to meet somewhere along the beltway and carpool into the city. Tyson's Corner Center is a major mall very near the beltway to the west of DC. White Flint Mall is another possibility on the NNW side, just outside the beltway near Bethesda. It doesn't have to be a mall, at all, but I'm trying to think of places cars could be parked for free with no danger of being towed away. (I can carpool two other people besides myself and Chris. Three if someone is thin and you don't mind being crowded.)
Any ideas for a rhendezvous point? Please post here.
If you know you're coming, drop me an email, too, and I'll pass you my cellphone number so you can reach me on Saturday.

I will most definitely be there. No need for me to carpool, though -- I'm already downtown. Just let me know where to meet you once we're in the city.
What other plans do we have for the day, besides the WWII memorial?
Also, I'll only be available until 2:30 or so -- my dad's coming into town to help me pack up my room

Unless something unusual comes up, I should definitely be there as well. One of my friends from school will probably be coming with me as well (maybe two).

*bump* Now that we're back, I need to start seriously planning. My hotel is having some seriously intermittent Internet access, so I'll keep checking here and E-mail from cybercafes when I can. Where should I be heading Saturday morning?

I need to know what time you plan to be in the area. If you are going to be in DC before 11:00, you should meet up with the others first. (I can't be there until about that time due to an orthodontist appointment I can't change.)
Do you want to post a time for the others to meet you at the WWII memorial, and I'll call your cell phone and catch up with you guys at 11:00?

Tom asked what time the rest of you could be there. As I've said, I'll be in the area around 11 or so. I sent my cell phone to your emails. You should post here and/or reply all to the group email I sent with a time suggestion for Tom to meet you (presumably at the WWII memorial.) If I don't hear from anyone otherwise, I'll be there at 11:00.

I just sent you an email with my cell number. I have practice tomorrow morning so I'll be a little late. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll be at the WWII memorial around 11:30 or 11:45

I didn't know about the balloon. I didn't check Hatrack until Friday night, and so I never got an email from KarlEd. But I don't remember a balloon. Hmmm.
