I remember when this first happened. We had fun in the office here thinking what would have happened to any of us if we were picked up for "extreme dui" and tried to knee an police officer in the groin.
The main question we had was whether our injuries would have required medical attention.
Today's sentencing, given the way he was politely handled after trying to assault a police officer, was no surprise.
Discussion at work today:
Worker one: Imagine if it had been James Brown who had done that.
Worker two: Yeah, he'd be looking at a few years at least.
Me: Well, if James Brown tried to knee somebody in the groin, he wouldn't have missed.
*sigh*
I guess you had to be there.

If you read the story, Campbell didn't get charged with assault. In the original coverage, they made it pretty clear that Campbell's target was the officer's groin, but due to his drunkenness and the officer's reactions, managed only to knee the officer in the leg.
The consensus here at work - among both black and white coworkers - (all two that I talked with) was that Brown would have hit what he was aiming at.
Like I said, you probably had to be there.
