I'm finally catching up, and while I've been back posting since Sunday evening I wanted to say thanks to all the Jatrqueros that hung out with me on my travels.
I got to hang out with Tom, Christy and CT. Tom and Christy made fabulous lasagna, and we generally had a fun-filled evening. We talked about books over the dinner table that I had never read, which was great fun, now I have more on my reading list! CT and I went to Coldstone Creamery to get ice cream to take to Tom and Christy. I forget the flavors we got but they were delicious!
Then they came to the dog show and got to see Jake and Ciara. Ciara passed her obedience class though it was ugly but passing is passing. Jake took Best of Breed though it wasn't that exciting because there weren't a lot of cardigan corgis there to compete.
Then we went to St. Louis. On Wednesday (I think it was wendesday) I got to have dinner with Dan_Raven and his lovely wife and got to see pictures of Alexander. We had a nice time as well at Joe's crabshack. Dan informed me that I wasn't missing much since hatrack had gone down. And then I suffered through hatrack withdrawals for the rest of the week. The hotel I stayed at just happened to give me a room with a balcony and a lake view, so on my lazy days where I wasn't doing something with the dogs, I sat up there and read a book. It was wonderfuly peaceful.
THat's about it. Jake did really well at the National coming in the top 6 out of 24 champions of his color, and then being in the top 14 out of 64 champions entered in Best of breed.
Once again to the hatrackers, it was lovely to see you all and it added a special touch to my vacation!

Nope after passing on Sunday she flunked both days in St. Louis. The first day there was a loud noise that spooked her on the recall and she sat too far away from me.
Then that evening she started throwing up. I don't know if it was stress or what. I could only give her about three sips of water at a time or it would come back up. She was a bit dehydrated the following morning and not herself. She sat in my lap while we waited by the ring, and she was pretty anemic. Her gum color was off too, and I was debating wether to put her in or not. I went ahead not expecing much yet she did everything correctly during the individual judging. But, 45 seconds into the 1 minute sit she lay down. She normally doesn't do that, and I think it was really because she was tired and worn out. So I don't blame her much.
Jake did well. He's gone from flunking 4 exercises each time down to flunking 2. So we are making progress, but I'm still having to help him with an extra command occasionally. AJ

One of my dogs growing up was named Jake. Jake and Misty, and their son, Argyle.
Jake ran away in a snowstorm. My dad suspects that the neighbor shot him, actually. Jake had a habit of raiding his chicken coop.

I'm not sure why, but Jake seems to be an incredibly common name for a dog. I can't think of a bonafide, modern human name that gets used for dogs more often, honestly.
The several dogs named Jake that I knew as a child added a certain amount of confusion to my life.

When I was growing up, we had a pair of dogs, Foxie and Annie (a little mutt who looked like a fox, and a collie, respectively). They disappeared one day, and stayed gone. A few weeks later my dad heard a guy who lived across the village from us brag about having caught two dogs who matched Foxie and Annie's descriptions, and having dumped them too far away for them to ever come back. Bastard was proud of himself. Keep in mind that this is out in the country, and that everybody let their dogs run loose, and that these were fairly well behaved dogs. My dad chewed the guy out, but we never found the dogs. I hope someone else adopted them.

I didn't name Jake, his breeder did. While I don't particluarly like it, I don't think it is fair to change a name on a dog either if you know what it is to begin with.
Ciara I did name after a fashion, but it was a fix since she already answered to the name "Sarah". Since I have several real human friends named Sarah it just wasn't going to work. Out in CA where I grew up there were a lot of dogs named "Sierra" like the Sierra Nevada mountains but, then it started getting popular as a kid's name too.
Ciara means "black" in gaelic and should be pronounced with a hard K, however I prounounce it like Sierra because it is easier and more what she was used to hearing.
My first dog was named "Splash" and more what I think a dog's name should be, not terribly human-name sounding.

Our first dogs were name Tammy and Cricket and were Cairn Terriers. Cricket was hit by a car when she was 2 but Tammy lived until she was almost 14.
Our next dog was a collie that is responsible for the fact that collies are now the only breed I'll ever consider owning. Dad named her Bridie, which we all assumed was short for Bridgett. Turns out it means "Meat Pie" back in Scotland. Who knew?

My favorite names for dogs I've had are Stick, Bundle, and Nike. The last was the only one I had a hand in naming though. Stick came into our family at about the same time I did, and Bundle kind of came with the house I moved into. Nike we named because she always won at everything she did, including getting adopted into our family when no one but me wanted her (she was a stray).
