My wife purchased a pair of Bose 301 bookshelf speakers at a yard sale last week. ($15! I love that woman) They seem to be in great shape with only some minor cosmetic issues.

My home stereo is an old Panasonic bi-wired bookshelf system (w/ matching bi-wired speakers). The stereo outputs are labeled "Low 2.7-8 ohms, High 8-16 ohms" (the speakers are not labeled). The Bose 301's are labeled "Impedence 8 ohms"

My question is this: Can I safely wire both the low and high outputs of my stereo into the single inputs of the 301's?

OK, I already DID hook them up this way and played them at a pretty low volume for about 2 minutes just to see if the speakers even worked (they did, and sounded good, too). I need to know if I can make the switch without wrecking my stereo or the 301's. Can anybody help me?

My memory is scanty from classes what seems like a 1000 years ago, but you should be safe.

Start slowly increasing volume and if distortion hits before mid-point back off and get some more power!

(From the days when spools were cleaned with Q-tips and rubbing alcohol.)

You want to hook them to either/or, but not both for optimum sound.

edit: hooking them to both won't give you any extra, really, and can't be good for your amp... but both outputs appear to be rated for 8 ohm speakers (which are pretty standard).

Thanks

I still clean some of my old audio equipment with alcohol and Q-tips!

Hook it to low, you'll be fine.
