I just wanted to rant about how stupid my school can be. I work in Ohio and I, like every teacher, need to renew my license every four years. To do this we work on CEU's (continuing education credits) It takes 18 CEU's to renew (1 CEU = 10 hours of actual training time/seminar time, so basically I have to put in 180 hours of continued Education) No big deal, Most professions require something similar, but here's the stupid part. In the state of Ohio, and perhaps others, we have to create something called an IPDP. Don't ask me what that stands for because I don't know, but basically it is a plan for how each teacher plans on reaching their required CEU's. I was hired on 8/28/01. I was told about this IPDP thing on 12/17/01 when I then drafted it up. It was approved on 1/24/02. I was told everything was fine and I just needed to turn in all my hours and no problem. Well now that I have to submit my paperwork to renew this summer I have been told that My CEU's prior to my approval date no longer count. ARGHHHHH!!! In my opinion the only thing that matters is that I have 18 CEU's from time of my first licensure date to time of renewal. I have that but only just and I need those hours. The state only cares that I have put in my time between renewals so what the crap is wrong with my stupid district? I'm currently bugging a lot of people to help me backdate my IPDP to reflect my hire date. If they won't I'm totally screwed and will end up losing my job again because of a technicality. Anyone else have really stupid policies at work that are messing with their stress levels?

Nothing as bad as yours.

As an engineer in Florida, I have to get 8 CEU's every 2 years. I get them at conferences, seminars and such. They are paid for by the company and done on company time.

I've always thought teachers get a royal shaft by having to pay for their CEU's out of their own pocket and doing it on their own time.

Actually I haven't paid for any of mine. Most of them are seminars and training days that the district offers through out the year. I do have three semester hours (1 Semester hour = 3 CEU's) from Bowling Green State University but those were free also through a cooperative teaching and program in sex education. Most of the stuff people pay for on their own is when they go back to school to get their masters but those hours count toward both your masters and your CEU's so it's not that bad since teachers with their masters get paid more anywyays.

Well, at least you know teaching is considered pretty special at the top. They don't put state and federal red tape all over just any profession.

The fire department my husband works for decided some years ago to stop contracting with a local ambulance service for emergency transport and do it all in-house. For that they needed a large number of licensed paramedics. My husband is one of them, having paid his way through paramedic school and done it on his own time - they woulnd't even let him take time off from the fire dept. to go to class, he had to use his vacation and sick time.

Now, because they need paramedics so badly, they give everyone that wants to get their license time off and they pay for the classes.

None of that is retroactive though. The thousands of dollars we spent on his tuition and the hundreds of hours of vacation and sick time he lost by having to take off for class is pretty much gone- they said they had no intention of paying people back for schooling already obtained.

*primal scream*

That is so unfair! Your husband is awesome for going through with it on his own. I can't believe they don't have more appreciation for it, expecially considering the nature of the job.

I can totally relate to the amount of time he must have put in. A co-worker of mine has been going through her course work this entire year and she is constantly studying. WHat a load of crap that the department is being so stupid.

It's hard to summon any outrage for it now, we went through all that when it was announced two years ago. I guess I'm just resigned to it.

Their reasoning is that you get an increase in pay for being a paramedic and so that should be his compensation. Of course, the people who go through the school now with paid time off and the courses paid for get the same increase in pay, but what are you going to do?

I don't know, a primal scream sounds like outrage to me. [Smile] I picture fire departments as tight-knit communities where the employees know each other and the people in charge, it seems like it would be bad on morale to have unequal treatment like that.
