My neice is graduating today. As a gift my wife and I are giving her a journal to write in with a special bookmark.

I am also giving her the note below. If you have any suggestions, great. If you are graduating, you don't get the journal, but enjoy the advice.

Finally, I have been working on this idea for about a week. I did not steal it from Chris's collum.

Thats my story and I'm sticking with it.

quote:
Congradulations!!!!

You have succeeded in the first steps of your education, and of your life. Now we, your friends and family, await with great joy, and not a little jealousy, as you begin the greatest adventures of your life.

The things you will learn, discover, enjoy and endure we can only imagine.

We all wish you the best of luck on the next part of your life.

It is with that wish in mind that we have enclosed a journal. This is the grand Journey that you begin, and for three important reasons, you must put it all down on paper.

First, this journal is just the right size and weight to deflect and too amourous young man. (OK, your Dad made that a consideration of any gift we give you.)

Second, to be a good writer you must do one thing--Write.

To be a professional writer you must do one thing--Write.

To be a famous writer you must do one thing--Write.

Write now and write often, even the simplest things, and it helps hone your skills and your love for words.

Finally, our memories are not as good as we think. Important things that you will learn and know will be gone with in an hour or a day or a decade. They may seem impossible that you will forget that wonderful profressor's name, or that friends fiance, or the atomic weight of Californium. Yet time will erase these from your mind faster than you realize, unless they are held in the concrete of Ink on Paper.

Besides, when you write, create ideas for poems or articles or stories of wonder, when you find that perfect word combination, analogy, or metaphor, you want them remembered. In a year or three or thirty, when you come back to this journal, you will read what you wrote...

and you will remember that you were/are GOOD!

Don't loose the wisdom of youth for ever.

It is in that vain that, being the wise old uncle I am, (and having your wiser Aunt next to me) that I offer some other great bits of advice on life.

Remember, Never pass up free chocolate.

Remember, Joy shared is increased. Sorrow shared is decreased.

Remember, When anyone forces you to choose between A or B, always choose C.

Remember, Smile often. It makes you feel better, calms your friends and confuses your enemies.

Remember, Fear turned inward is Depression. Fear turned outward is violence.

Remember, You can never truly know the depth of anyone elses fear, faith, love or pain.

Remember, Everyone wants to be understood, but almost no one wants to understand.

Remember, Time spent without looking at a clock lasts longer.

Remember, Give people the benefit of the doubt, but don't forget the doubt. To forgive is human, to forget is down right dangerous.

Remember, Never trust anyone who says "Trust Me."
Never join sides with anyone who demands that "You are either with us or against us."
Never agree to any sale that must be agreed upon right now.

Remember, I before E except After C, cause you'll look like a jerk if the spell check don't work.

Remember, Love does not conquer all, and is never free, nor does it ever run smooth.

Remember, There are reasons we have different words for Love and Attraction, Explanation and Excuse, Need and Want.

Any others?
