Seasonal allergies go tubular

To everything, there is a season. "The Swan" has flown, "Frasier" and "Friends" are gone, and now all of our favorite ongoing TV shows are in reruns for the next three months. Time to give the set a rest, get outside, and spend some time with your family and friends.

Ha! Of course I'm kidding.

The networks, frantic at the thought that we might blink, are all programming new stuff for the summer. Advertisers need numbers, viewers need constant stimulation, networks are threatened by DVDs and videos, and 30 weeks of reruns just ain't gonna cut it no more. So we can expect lots of cheap-to-produce reality shows clogging up the airwaves, 24-hour Paris Hilton updates via satellite, and a few sitcoms and dramas that weren't quite good enough to be midseason replacements. NBC is starting their new shows in August, Bravo is advertising new "Queer Eye" episodes all summer, and FOX is abandoning the concept of "season" entirely and introducing new programming all year round just for kicks.

Great article!
Is it just me or is this trend of networks having two of the same show on repeat in a row during the regular viewing season a new thing?
I hate it. It gets on my nerves. Worse is when They show one foolish reality show on Monday then they repeat the same episode on Thursday.
Why do they do that? I've seen a ton of shows that had some sort of potential; Tarzan, Wonderfalls get cancelled in seconds and replaced by some horrible irratating reality show.
What are these people thinking?
Great part at the end too.

Because networks usually don't make their money back from a show until it's been shown at least twice.
Problem is, they're trying to kill off the rerun season, so they have to show it again sometime, and this way they can say it's for people who missed it earlier in the week.

There's always a reason for what they do. It mnake not make sense to nayone else, but there's always a reason.

By the way, another great article Chris. These station executives are all morons.

Another personal TV peeve - why do networks (especially FOX) keep moving dramas to Friday when they should know by now they'll die there?

I understand that they want the younger market and they hope to keep them home to watch TV, but it doesn't work. Has any hour-long show ever succeeded on a Friday night? The schedule has become known as the Friday Night Death Slot.

It's where the original Star Trek ened up in its third season. It nearly killed X-Files before they moved it to Sundays. Wonderfalls was put there to die, a clear case of neglible homicide. Firefly never had a chance; it was on Friday nights, FOX showed the episodes badly out of order, and it was dropped just as it was getting attention.

Personally I hope that every show treated thusly gets massive DVD sales (like Firefly did) and moves on to better networks or feature films (like Firefly is).

Wasn't Dark Angel a Friday night show also. I remember waiting and searching and screaming in September of the "third" season for it only to find out it had vanished with out so much as a whisper from fox. Big stupid Jerk faces!

I heard they are moving Enterprise to Fridays. But that is good for us, because we can never see it on it's current Wednesday night slot due to church meetings.

Speaking of Enterprise, is tonight the season finale? They show it on the WB around here, since there is no UPN, but we never get any previews or anything. It was pure coincidence that I actually managed to find it at all (I think I watched an episode of Angel and didn't bother to turn off the TV).

It may have been. Though it didn't have the typical cliffhangers of most season finales. Plus mine may also be a week behind. Never can tell when they cross to a different network.

Yep. And not only that, but over at startrek.com, Scott Bakula is going to be doing a live internet chat! Gosh, I'm so excited.

On a more serious note, kind of, Wayne Brady has been promised a guest spot next season.

Farmgirl, do you not have a VCR?

Okay, way too fast for me. That's what I get for leaving and not checking for updates before I post. This post was in response to the first one asking about a Season Finale tonight.
