With a little more than 2 months of planning ahead, time for the big question: what are the things I need to see in NYC, Boston and Philly? And who will I see while there?
The dates (might shift a bit):
NYC: August 7-12 Chicago: August 13-15 Boston: August 17/18-22 Philadelphia: August 23-26
I'm not happy about having to share the last week of my trip between the Philly group and my high school friend who lives in the area - unless we'll find a way to incorporate her into the plans, whatever they will be...
Give me some ideas!

For NYC: Go to the Cloisters (museum), the Met (museum), the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty (it'll be open by the time you arrive), FAO Schwarz (giant toy store - if you're there with Frisco, I'm sure he'll go nuts and be entertaining), Brooklyn Bridge (eat food at nearby Chinatown while you're there) and Wall Street (it really looks like giant walls on either side when you walk down this street), Central Park (go naked in Central Park in the middle of the night like in The Fisher King). There's also the National Debt Clock, Radio City Music Hall, the Kennedy Center, etc. but you really don't have time. Take the subway everywhere. Really this is all just Manhattan, but you only have a few days...
Also, you must have bagels and lox to eat at least once and eat genuine NYC pizza at 2 AM after listening to a local funk/jazz/blues band. It's a moral imperative.
Remember, the service people there aren't rude - they just want to serve as many customers as possible and they get frustrated with people who are slow at making decisions. Also, never look at the crosswalk signs - everyone walks across the street whenever they want.

Kama, You must get a greasy sausage grinder in Fanueil Hall, late at night, after drinking somewhere in Boston, from The Sausage King.
Also, you must go to Kelly's ON THE BEACH in Revere. Do not let anyone convince you to go to the fancy new Kelly's. You must experience Kelly's in Revere, because it is there that you will hear the most wicked Boston area accents.

FAO Schwartz is out of business as far as I know. So sad.
Well, I'll obviously be around during your philly leg. And i'm fine with most days for a get together. Kira I think is done with her one job by then so I think she'd be good with anything not on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.
Don't really know much to do in Philly though. I don't go in there often.

Well, I dunno if the rest of the Philly crew is into high class entertainment , but we could always do the Museum of Art. I work there during the school year...might be able to get you some discounts...not sure on that.

You need most of a day for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. You just can't do it in a couple of hours, but its entirely worth it. Skip the Statue of Liberty. Its not worth the price or time of the ferry ride, and you can get a good look from the cheap Staten Island ferry if you want. Also, its a lot of fun to just stroll around the Village and check out all the cool shops and old buildings.

Agreed about the statue of liberty. There is NO need to go out to the island.
In Chicago, you must eat at Ed Debevic's and buy a shot glass. The Art Institute there is also fantastic and worth a bunch of time that you probably don't have. Navy Pier is a great place to visit, and if you can catch the symphony, I highly recommend it. Oh, and be sure to walk down Lakeshore drive all the way to the Planetarium so you can get your skyline picture. Chicago has the best skyline in the world.

And as a PS, though Greg's putting you up (of course!) the only day you can have us both for the full day is the 26th...the 23rd we both work, the 24th I work, and the 25th he works!

I have a favor to ask Boston area people... I can't get days off for vacation, so Kama will be left to her own devices for the first bit, so if someone could show her some of the town, that would be great.
Also, if someone (Paul, I'm looking at you) would mind having Kama stay with them for a few nights, it'd probably be good for Kama's sanity. This doesn't mean you can't stay at my place the whole week, Kama, but I don't want hog you.

I will add that you may want to add a day to the Philly end, especially if you will be splitting time with people (and if you are coming on the 17th). Boston isn't THAT big a town (especially after NYC and Chicago!).
See, there was this thread about a possible picnic on the weekend of the 21st?
If it's not terribly far, I could go to Philly first, then come for the weekend, and go back to Philly? Or if the picnic doesn't work out, I would first come to Boston and leave for Philly before the weekend? These dates are very flexible, just meant as orientation points, so if it's better any other way round, I'll gladly adjust.

Philly is about a 6-7 hour train ride, 5-6 hour car ride.
Pretty far.
Actually, the times are fine (my girlfriend and I are moving Sept. 1, so earlier in August is better), it's just that I couldn't get time off, since we are going on our first "real" vacation together at the end of July, and this new job accumulates vacation over time, as opposed to my old job. As a result, you would only see me at night, and I wouldn't be able to show you around town too much, except the weekend and nights.

The one in LA was related to the Chicago one but is apparently closed. *sigh* I have good memories of that place! but sometime I can go to the Chicago one now!

Kama, Northampton is about an hour and 45 minutes from Boston by car, or about eight hours by bus. If I am around(we are going to AZ somewhere around that time) I could pick you up at the Springfield bus station. It is a shorter ride because you can get an express to Springfield.

Kama, sorry, I was exaggerating. It is just that some of the bus routes out this way stop at every little town. Springfield is a direct route, and there is a better chance of getting an express trip which would go straight fro Boston to Springfield, with no stops, or just a couple.
