Well...

Just to explain to everyone why I love music so much...you see, I have a horrible memory. No, sort of a savant memory. I can remember certain things perfectly. Well, anyway, I have terrible memory.

But anyway, music can bind memories down. I hear a song, and it all comes back. No, not "all". Just one or two scenes...

So, anyway, music keeps me connected to the world. I have good enough memory to live you know, nothing that horrible.

Anyway...

And music is so touching and intensely emotional.
Combine the two? I get memories with music, truly emotional, and all that.

That's that.

[Wink]

Thanks for reading my rant. [Razz]

i love studying the connection between different senses and memory!

apparently smell on average is sense mostly strongly tied to memory.

moving certain ways kindles memories for me.
some people break down crying during deep tissue massage because we keep many old memories and strong emotions way down in our secondary muscles.

sometimes i smell my grandmother's perfume and it makes me very happy.

other times i smell the skating rink, and it makes me feel very awkward and very aware of how much deodorant i put on in the morning.
oh boy, i love this topic!

the smell of fresh corn makes me think of when i was younger and my mother used to make me sit on the porch of my grandparents' cottage on the lake and shuck corn for dinner.

art gum erasers instantly put me back in an art program i was in during grades 5-7. i am sitting on a metal stool at a large square table and my feet can't reach the ground. i was very sensitive to mr. karl's criticism.

working on my turnout in tendu a la second reminds me of my old dance teacher and family friend patricia sorrell/pat pepper. i feel her hands pressing my foot and i can see her gnarled feet and long toes curl section by section into a perfect curve.
i smell that old dance studio all the time.
bending my elbows a certain way make me remember my other dance teacher and close friend, elbert watson.
i can always tell when someone is smoking a camel because i see my grandmother sitting at her kitchen table under the single leaky amber light.
when i sit in big fuzzy chairs i am back in my grandfather's recliner, watching the jungle book while my brothers stir up the muck in the lake.

This is why poetry and music were invented! Memory tools for passing on history and news before the written word.

On a similar note, the other night i was listening to a cd in my headphones and standing in the parking lot of my apartment complex staring into the night sky. suddenly i was reminded of Denver. and the feeling i felt was bittersweet. specifically i recalled standing on the rooftop of my hotel 9 stories in the air and listening to various records at 3am when the city was asleep. the record playing in my cd player when i remembered this was the BRIGHT EYES/NEVA DINOVA split which i of course did not have at the time. But it reminded me of this, and that night i decided i'd make a mixtape of songs that i DID listen to on that rooftop. so this experience and sudden feeling and memory wash over me inspired me to make a mixtape of songs i listened to from that period so i CAN (hopefully) recall that feeling of peace and serenity anytime i listen to it.
