So yeah, I'm supposed to be working. However my mother has decided that she's coming to my best friend's wedding, the one I'm going to be maid of honor in. (Yes she was invited)

However she asks Me to make the plane reservations for her, due to the fact that they currently have no internet access due to the fact she burned down the garage and they are living in a rental until the old place gets fixed.

So I go to find the internet deals and I realize I don't have her credit card number. I call to get this bit of info, and she hands the phone to my brother since she is driving. He reads it all off. Good. Now I can do the reserving.

I fish around for good rates a while phoning back and forth at least five times with her vetoing, due to flight times. Then I suddenly remember that Southwest deals aren't on the travelocities or pricelines. Find a southwest roundtrip flight that works. Save her over $60.

Then my woes really begin. My brother neglected to tell me whether the card was a Mastercard or Visa. Have to call back. Find out it was a Visa Hang up.

Realize that I don't know which address is the correct billing address for the card, since they are residing elsewhere for the moment. Call, straighten this out. Hang Up.

Then, figure out how to send the confirmation information. Call again. Could go to the burned out house, but that's not a great idea. She doesn't have e-mail that works and is clueless about remote access. Can't send it to my father's work because it's a government/military e-mail. Contemplate sending it to my brother who could get it from the library, but don't know if the library allows printing. Brother not keen on idea anyway. Could send it to me in IL, but then I'd have to print it and mail it back to CA which doesn't make sense. Decide to send it to my best friend's mother who lives in the same town as my mother and is also my mother's good friend. But I don't have her e-mail address. Hang up.

Call best friends mother. Get answering machine. Leave message. Hang up.

Call best friend. Get her mother's e-mail address. Put her on hold on my cell while I actually get a work related call on my work phone. She doesn't remember her mother's e-mail and asks her fiancee. Finally get e-mail address and make reservation.

*giant sigh of relief* Why do simple things have to be so complicated?!

I'm afraid to think what the hotel reservation is going to be like!

Aren't you glad we have computers to make our lives easier? Imagine what this would have been like 20 years ago!

20 years ago, her mother would have had to make a special trip to a travel agent or to the airport and with all that hassle, she probably would have decided to just skip the whole thing.

I still refuse to get a cell phone. I don't want to answer the phone at my house, why would I want to "reachable" 27/7?

Electronics are evil.

Cell phones are great. Keep them silent - you call when you want, but are never bothered by someone calling you.

Great for people who forget the address their supposed to be driving too. Not that I ever do that.

I am one of those people who actually axed their land line because SBC was ticking me off so much. I kept battling them and battling them and I never got the $70 back they owed me.

But I keep the ringer off on my cell. I listen to my messages at my convienence and don't talk to anyone I don't want to.

I have emergency only service on my cell. 50 minutes per month for $12. I don't want to talk to anyone while I'm driving, but if I break down, I figure I'm already pulled off the road, so I may as well talk to someone about it.

Make friends with a travel agent and have them look up the best fares for you on Apollo Focalpoint.

Yeah, well if I make friends with a travel agent I'll do exactly that.

However non-stop round trip from LAX to Tucson for $116.57 isn't a bad deal.

AJ, this is why you tell your mom that this wonderful invention called the telephone works just as well for calling airlines to make reservations as it does for calling you.... [Wink]

Then she pulls out the "but I hate talking to STRANGERS on the phone" line. It isn't worth hearing that one...
