some friends and i were commenting on the beastie boys during their mtv movie awards performance.
one, that we suddenly realized how old they were. two, you only buy beastie boys if you specifically want to hear beastie boys, not if you want to try something new. i like them, but all their music is pretty similar, so i only listen when i am in that very specific mood.

I'm listening to it right now and it's pretty cool.
But you're right Porcelain Girl, no matter what the Beasties release, it's always the "Beastie Boys". It's a certain sound and if you don't like their older stuff you won't like their new stuff. And while they're music does have a similar sound, I wouldn't go as far as calling all their music the same. Ill Communication, Licence to Ill, Check your Head, Pauls Boutique, and Hello Nasty are all different albums with different vibes.
You also have to remember that Beastie Boys were one of the first groups to really get into sampling, and it only caught on after them. They have albums where it's all straight rap with and MC an albums where they all play their own instruments, where they "rock" a little more.
The Beasties used to be one of my favorite bands, and though I don't have the love for them that i used to, I was still really looking forward to hearing a new album from them. And no matter what I think it's important to remember what they did for the music scene. Even if nothing more than being three white jewish guys that made it huge in rap.
edit- Just wanted to add that Hello Nasty and the new one are definitely a more laid back feel than their early stuff. So I can see that appealing more or less to people with different tastes.

Are the Beastie Boys on the new McDonald's commercial? Because if so, I will cry. It definitely sounds like them...

Serious Ben? Is it really worth buying? Or mearly downloading for free? I consider my a fan of the Beasties Three but that "Check it Out" song just rubs me the wrong way. It's no Hello Nasty.
But, have you failed me yet, oh master of music?

ok. when i first heard it i thought CH-CH-Check it out sucked ass.
then i bought this album. first listen (i suggested the buy after listening once, it was kind of an empty promo to be honest with you) i was well, disappointed. as a matter of fact my first few spins all left me feeling a little gipped.
So this morning i popped my headphones on and headed into town for breakfast around 6:30. i have now listened almost 3 times. It finally clicked... let me explain.
One of my biggest problems with the album at first was, well, the lack of live instrumentation. And all of the music had a cheesy casio feel to it. I had gotten used to elaborate sounds and music from the boys.
I knew it was supposed to be a throwback to earlier hip-hop (the entire album i mean) but i didnt really dig that.
But this morning i realized the sounds are indeed complexly layered. It was just that i was expecting something different. At work last night i listened to Tribe Called Quest and Run DMC. When i popped the record in this morning i realized that this album, like the early recordings of those previously mentioned bands, flows from start to finish. It is the first Beasties record that doesn't trip you up rhythm-wise. You can listen to the record from start to finish without shifting tempo. It's a mid-tempo record from start to finish. Every other Beasties record is all over the place with sound, style, and pacing. This record is consistent from start to finish. A first for the beasties. And, after putting my expectations aside, i had fun moving to this record. In fact i'm still listening to it now. i don't know if my rambling makes sense as i just kind of typed what was on my mind and am not gonna proof this, but i hope this does my feel for the record justice.
P.S - I don't think it's their swan song. So i am not disappointed anymore that the scattered sound and live instruments are missing, because i know there will be more.
