Any musical fans out there? Any ABBA fans out there?
Any of you hear of the super cool musical "CHESS"?

Well... I just happen to be all three of these things. [Wink] I was in the production for one of our local players' guild and the music means a lot to me.

With my parents divorce going on and my mother's agony over it one song is especially poignant for her. I can't really let you hear the music, but I would like to share the lyrics with you. [Smile]
quote:

SOMEONE ELSE'S STORY
“FLORENCE”

Long ago
In someone else's lifetime
Someone with my name
Who looked a lot like me
Came to know
A man and made a promise
He only had to say
And that's where she would be
Lately
Although her feelings run just as deep
The promise she made has grown impossible to keep
And yet, I wish it wasn't so
Will he miss me if I go?

In a way
It's someone else's story
I don't see myself
As taking part at all
Yesterday
A girl that I was fond of
Finally could see
The writing on the wall
Sadly
She realized she'd left him behind
And sadder than that she knew he wouldn't even mind
And though, there's nothing left to say
Would he listen if I stay?

It's all very well to say you fool it's now or never
I could be choosing
No choices whatsoever

I could be
In someone else's story
In someone else's life
And he could be in mine
I don't see
A reason to be lonely
I should take my chances
Further down the line

And if
That girl I knew should ask my advice
Oh I wouldn't hesitate, she needn't ask me twice
Go now!
I'd tell her that for free
Trouble is, the girl is me
The story is, the girl is me

I love this musical!!!! Schwartz cited it as the main musical inspiration for WICKED, too, so there's good company.

The whole musical is amazing. "Someone Else's Story" has meant so much to me a few times, and One Night In Bankok is one the songs I have completely memorized. [Smile]

I never tire of listening to Abba, and my wife never tires of listening to Chess.

Kat you rock!!

One night In Bankok and the world's your oyster....the bars are temples but the pearls ain't free!

Hehe... I played several roles in the show and in that scene I was a pimp with lots o ladies hanging on my arm. Hehehe... ahhh...shame...

I didn't know that Schwartz said CHESS influenced him so much for Wicked! That's amazing but makes perfect sense!

I was once involved with a disastorous series of inter-office political infighting.

I taped the theme from "Noone's on nobody's side" (Or what ever the song's name is) on my desk. I just repeated it to myself as neccesary until I found I new job.

quote:
Never take a stranger's advice
Never let a friend fool you twice
Never be the first one to leave
Never be the last to decieve

Honestly, I wore out one tape of the soundtrack, and have come close to wearing out the second.

I have never seen the musical performed though.

Do you have the English or New York soundtrack. I prefer the original English. They changed some songs and such when it moved to New York.

Excellent, excellent musical. Sadly, all I really know of it is the initial recording made before the musical was ever actually produced. I have to say, though, that I like this version of the story more than the one that eventually developed.

While I am not a big ABBA fan and have never heard of Chess, I do consider the song "Fernando" to be one of the top ten ever. They got a home run with that one and it goes a long way in overriding their "disco-ness" in my mind.

Wasn't it good!
oh so good!
Wasn't he fine!
oh so fine!

Isn't it madness...
He can't be mine.

But in the end he needs a little bit more than me
More security...
he needs his fantasy and freedom...

I know him so well!

Didn't I know...
How it would go
if I knew from the start!
Why am I falling apart! <-----love this bit

I love this show! [Smile]

Cor and I performed the "Terrace Duet" for a Rotary Club dinner not too long ago.

Jalepenoman, two things: "Dancing Queen" was an exception, not the norm. Expose yourself to more ABBA and you will see they were NOT a disco band. Also, Chess is not a tribute show, like Mama Mía. In fact, it's neither by nor about ABBA. It's written by Björn Ulvaus (sp?) and Tim Rice. Ulvaus was a member of ABBA and, along with Benni Anderson (sp?), the primary songwriter. So, even if you don't like ABBA, you might well like Chess. It's an intense show about the cold war, human relationships, and obsession, with powerful songs.

Telperion, I demand that you take this medal back. My father wasn't cool, my grandfather wasn't cool, and neither was his father. It would be a betryal of my whole family if I became cool.

Every night before bed, we listen to "One Night in Bangkok". Every morning, we listen to "Good Morning Starshine". These are two songs that mean alot to us, although for stupid, stupid reasons.

The first thing happened when my husband and I were dating. We used to do this really stupid thing. We piled crumpled newspapers up in the middle of the road after dark to see if cars would stop. We made a speed bump of sorts all the way across his neighborhood road, then we waited behind the wall to see what would happen. Some cars would slow down until they saw what it was, then drive slowly through. Sometimes they'd get out of the cars, walk over to the newspaper, kick it around, get back in the car and drive through. Some guys would turn around and go another way. We'd watch them, laugh silently, and then when they were gone, we'd pile up the newspaper again.

But one guy, the uberest-cool guy of them all, sped up. He flew through the "barrier", blowing newspaper all around. His windows were down, and he had cranked "One Night in Bangkok" to eleven. For some reason, it was one of the funniest things we had ever seen. That song holds a lot of memories for us, for something that was so goofy.

But if you think this story is dumb, I'll tell you about Paper-Cupping cars one day.

This was probably me.
