I've worried about whether this statement meant that he agree to convert to their cause.

Remember it's only one, unconfirmed source that's saying that, though.. and there have been at least three conflicting versions of what happened. One theory I have heard advanced is that the marine managed to escape and they are now trying to find ways to damage control it.
No one has anything to say about the masked men threating the insurgent leader?

See? I am not so cynical as this. Those are the words of someone who has already written the whole thing off as nothing to do with him.
This struggle is one in which the whole world should be doing everything they can to find a way to a good outcome. Iraqis aren't a them anymore, they're an us. How can we foster the emergence of peace and civilization and the rule of law out of a chaotic situation?
I think it's been true all along that the vast majority of Iraqis are opposed to the insurgency. I don't know if it's such a good sign that counterinsurgent groups spring up to fight the insurgents. I would hope a legitimate government could effectively fight them instead. But as a sign of the lack of support of the Iraqi people at large for the insurgency, I suppose it's positive in that sense.
