"I'm not in love with you anymore."
"I didn't know you ever were."
"Let's not make this harder than it already is."

I'm really trying to enjoy Wes Anderson. It's quirky. I like that. The mis en scene is never boring. I like that also. The soundtrack is both classic and challenging. All good. The story is surprising and unusual. This is a positive point. The Royal Tenenbaums has an incredible cast. I'm willing to watch movies just for the cast occasionally, up to and including Starsky and Hutch. Maybe that should go in the Embarassing Movies thread.

"Why'd you try to kill yourself?"
"I wrote a suicide note."
"You did?"
"Right after I gained conciousness."
"Can we read it?"
"No."
"Can you paraphrase it for us?"

But still. I do not like Rushmore. I do not like The Royal Tenenbaums. I don't know why this is.

I loved Rushmore. The only person I've met in person who also loves it is my fiancee.

I don't hate it. Catherine actually hated it. I just don't like it. I don't know why.

Okay, I just changed my mind about the Royal Tenanbaums. Because of the scene in the tent.

rushmore is one of my favorite movies.
my brothers love it.
my mother was even amused, though she did not appreciate a couple of the jokes.
both my roommates back in richmond loved it, as does my current roommate.

for a while i thought jason schwartzman could not play any other character, but even though slackers was extremely vulgar, he was brilliant in it as well, but completely different. awesome. in fact, he WAS the whole movie.

so anyway, i guess my point is i love rushmore, and so do lots of people i know. and i just realized owen wilson cowrote rushmore. my love is now complete.

I'm close to returning to being annoyed again.

This was good, though.

"I wish someone had done this for me when I was younger."
"But you didn't have a drug problem then."
"Still, it would have meant a lot to me."

zI hate TRT....one of the worst movies. Ever.

Too bad, with that cast...I expected so much more of it.

"These are OR scrubs."

"Oh, are they?"

That absolutely slays me. Even just thinking about it. I don't know why.

Edit: In trying to be more helpful, one thing that does bug me a bit about Wes Anderson is that in nearly every bit of film-craft - costumes, editing, even character names - it's like he's standing in the corner of the screen waving his arms and yelling, "Look! I'm quirky!" His determination to be odd, yet also touching, grows slightly irritating, and particularly in Tenenbaums overwhelms the story at some points.

Thor, you are a reassuring constant in my life.

========

The opening quotes on this page from The Royal Tenenbaums remind me of an exchange on, I believe, Seinfeld of which I was told (apologies for the paraphrase).

"We're going to have to fire you."
"But I don't even work here."
"That's makes this so hard."

For some reason, except in the tent scene which I just loved (and it is by no means inconceivable that I'm just a romantic, even when it comes to legally and biologically possible but downright squicky sibling incest), The Royal Tenanbaums never had its excellent parts add up to a decent whole. Maybe it was too self-absorbed and self-conciously quirky, maybe that got in the way of the story. Maybe too maybe choices were made for their gleeful momentary effect rather than their cumulutive place - that often happens in comedies. The problem is that TRT is a drama, and it works less often in drama. The audience is not laughing so hard they can't see the story.

"Nice nurse's outfit."

"Plus, she's still in love with that dead guy."

"Pull your head out of your ass!"

And that scene with the bees in the hotel room?

Rushmore was pure celluloid goodness.

I remember the litmus test movies thread I started was started because of Wes Anderson. His movies are very polarizing, and not in a Michael Moore way. You either love them or you hate them, and some people think that if you don't like them you're not worth knowing.

I disagree with this.

However, if you don't like Wes Anderson and also don't like the Big Lebowski, I probably won't brake if you're in the middle of the street.

This reminds me of Albert Brooks in "Mother."(I think that was the name...)

His mother: "I love you."
Albert: "I know you THINK you do..."

"What?"
"Hmm?"
"What'd you say?"
"I didn't say anything."
"When, just now?"
*nods*
"Oh... I'm sorry, I've been flying on mescaline all day."
"Di...Did you say you're on mescaline?"
"I did indeed."
