Heroes! I've never really had any. But over the course of the past year, I've found some folks that I truly admire.
Gandhi - Even though his personal life stank, his idealism and willingness to love his way through world politics takes my breath away.
Thomas Eisner - Cornell entomologist, author of "For the Love of Insects". He explores the biochemistry of the insect world with such delight and joy. I can only hope to experience such fulfillment in my life.
Hayao Miyazaki - My daughter and I have become enchanted by his films. Not only is he the Supreme Animated Movie Maker, but he is an excellent storyteller. His films are full of innocence, joy, connection, truthful portrayals of family, and that impossible to describe feeling that I previously have only experienced in the natural world. On top of that, his movies are so visually beautiful that it is like looking at photographs.

That's funny. I just picked up "Spirited Away" at the library this morning. I'll report back later what I thought of it, but now I'm even more excited to see it.

Funny, I share two of your heroes, my friend.
I was reading this book that suggested you should find archetypes that you identify with and use them to help guide yourself through life (sort of a WWJD kind of thing, but with other models thrown in, too). I thought of you and the myth of Persephone-- how perfectly it fits you. I mean it. When I think of you, I think of spring, green, growing things and the smell of earth under my fingernails.
