Stargate:Atlantis, the new spinoff of Stargate:SG-1 is on tonight on the Sci Fi channel. The site says it's on at 9 pm, but you should probably check your local listing just in case. It looks like they have a reasonably interesting premise for the show, but I won't spoil it for anyone. I do have one question, though: can anyone record this for me? I don't get the Sci Fi channel. I'll be happy to pay for shipping, as well as the cost of the video tape.

Heh, Mabus... Aliens sound sucky. Was that an intentional pun? (It's pretty much what they are according the previews)

Also, they're advertising both the Farscapae mini-series as well as the Battlestar Galactica series (coming in January) pretty heavily during the commercials.

Well, I'll let you know what I think when it's done with.

I watched it...I didn't think it was bad. The bad aliens that they are up against are rather cheesy...and very flat. It was good enough that I stuck through the entire 2 hour pilot, though I am not sure if I will bother with future episodes. I might check out the second episode just to give it a chance. I never really got into the original stargate, so I doubt I will get into this one either.

All in all, it seems like one of those shows that works well over the summer, but would have problems surviving during the normal TV season.

The aliens apparently are not very technologically advanced. They have no alarms, no sensors to give them the heads up that strangers with guns are sneaking up on their giant bedroom (or building where their people are all sound asleep)?

I enjoyed the buildings of Atlantis. Stain glass windows? Nice!

I had the impression that they probably didn't see a need. The humans they deal with have no effective weapons that can truly hurt them.

But I don't see how the humans are going to match up against a race that defeated the Ancients.

Human ingenuity. Isn't that what it's always about? All these other species have some great physical or mental abilities, but humans are always ingenious, so we come up with terribly odd ways of winning which all the really intelligent races wouldn't have thought of. (See Asgaard vs. Replicators)

Human ingenuity? More like "what the hell, try this and see what happens."

Mostly because we're either too dumb or too optimistic to talk ourselves out of it.

Sometimes it takes an objective (primitive?) perspective to consider what a more civilized person won't.

I am curious to see how they will continue to develop the storyline for "Atlantis" - I haven't seen the pilot yet and on paper, the story seems have a limited potential for new plotlines.

I had my doubts about stargate: atlantis, especially since stargate: infinity sucked so much. However, I found it rather enjoyable, and the aliens weren't quite as cheasy as I thought they would be.

Oh, and Gate Ship is far superior to "puddle jumper". "puddle jumper" just sounds too flamboyant.

Eh.

It'll provide background to the series, but it's hardly required.

Otherwise, I could take it or leave it.

What bothers me is that these descendents of the ancients, living on some planet in the Pegasus galaxy the team gates to from Atlantis, supposedly removed from Earth humans by two million years of evolution (they said), yet conveniently speak English, and understand the Earthlings perfectly. Even worse, the Wraith speak English. Aw come on, I know they have to simplify things, but this is more than my suspension of disbelief organ can take.

The Atlantis Stargate looks a little more advanced than the earth Stargate when it is cycling through the symbols, like it might be an improved model. The force field shield instead of an iris is an improvement. I thought it was funny when one of the comic relief characters started calling out "Chevron one, LOCKED!" and Dr. Weir glared at him, shutting him up.

No question, the Atlantis space ships ("Puddle jumpers") are the niftiest yet, better than anything Stargate: SGC-1 ever had, and clearly superior to the Wraith space ships.

The major (what was his name?--the one who we first saw as a helicopter pilot), is a much more interesting character than Col. (now Gen.) Jack O'Neill. He combines a little bit of the Daniel Jackson character with a real military man, plus a jaunty flyboy attitude added in.

I was glad they got rid of the loud-mouthed Colonel, even though he was the only convincingly military person in the show. At least he died nobly, refusing to talk.

Incidentally, when the Wraith sucked the life-force out of the Colonel so that he appeared to die of old age, it reminded me of "the Machine" in the movie, The Princess Bride.

Apparently, there has been some irritated fans over the choice of teams.

I heard gossip that a larger fan base wanted another team that had appeared in an earlier SG-1 episode as the banner crew for this episode.

Has anyone else noticed that the Wraiths look like Marilyn Manson? It seems a little hard to take them seriously with that long, plastic-looking reddish-violet hair. So the terrible enemy that drove the ancients into fleeing and hiding was a rock group. Well, Marilyn Manson has about the same effect on me.

For a one-way trip, do you even want to speculate as to whether they packed enough ammo for all those P-90s, rocket launchers and whatnot?

It's one of the few times a staff weapon would be useful.

Well, they never said that there wouldn't be any way to reequip the team. After all, the SGC can open a wormhole to Atlantis, there just isn't enough power to open one in the other direction. I don't think they ever said this wasn't the way it would go down, so it's possible.

I guess.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. Still, O'Neill made a singe use power source when he had the knowledge of the Ancients the first time, so there's no saying they won't figure out how do it again. If they try to address this little issue, which I'm 98% sure they won't.

duh, if they get back to earth there is no series
though they will probably get back in the nick of time when the (correction) Wraiths figure out where it is and how to attack it. Which may or may not happen depending on whether the series succeds or tanks.

It was just a little too predicitable for me. Though the atlantis visuals were awesome.

The Ancients were the ones attacked and decimated by the Wraith. The Wraith were the Marilyn Manson vampire-esque critters with bad teeth.

Although the Atlantis base will have better luck since the humans left in Pegasus apparently still know how to work the gate system and indeed use it often.

I was mixing up the ancients and the wraiths because in some book I read somewhere the Ancients were technically "immortals" like the wraiths kind of are.

I'm sure they were, technically.

Ancient medicine was most probably magnificient, capable of curing anything short of death.

Possibly. We know they were chased off of Earth because of a plague they presumeably could not cure.

The Wraith, in so far as we are aware, are probably immune to things such as age but are not impervious to injury, insofar as we know from the pilot.

Something off that occurred to me...

Why are all the Wraith sleeping? Presumably because the human population is currently too low to feed all of them. Now they are all awake. If the humans can evade them long enough, they will die of starvation! Something's not right there about waking them all.

Unfortunately, it now means the Wraith are aware that "something's up."

Whether or not they learn about the possibility of Earth and a whole new galaxy of feasting, they will probably make a point of leaving more than just a token force awake to deal with the humans who had the nerve and capability to strike back at the very heart of Wraith central.

Of course, they're all psychically linked, they all know about this magical "Earth" with a billion happy meals, fast food for the space vampire on the go and are engaging in an all-out hunt for the new Humans. Just a hunch.
