What makes me smile is this quote from Elder Maxwell's funeral service:

Haight, Elder Maxwell raised his cane toward his friend in a fencing gesture, "on guard!" Elder Haight responded, and "there was a fencing match of sorts. I just saw a note on this on KBYU. For some reason I am much more affected than when Maxwell died. Even though it was much more anticipated. I guess he had a greater impact on my fundamental view of reality.

I was pretty surprised at Elder Maxwell's passing because I didn't know that his health was failing again. On the other hand, I was not nearly so surprised to hear of Elder Haight's passing. I am impressed he was with us as long as he was! I was just surprised with both happening in quick succession.
I am very sad though, at both. Thanks for sharing the story about the Apostle Duel, that was really cute.
This is like last time! Two new apostles at once. Well, that is assuming we don't lose any others between now and then.

That story Elder Haight told about being baptised in the ditch was a hoot. He and his buddies had been horsing around in the water, when his dad, the bishop, came out of the wardhouse and baptised young David on the spot. After the baptism, David crossed back to the other side of the ditch to rejoin his buddies.

Any speculation as to whom those two might be is probably without merit, but I'm thinking Bishop Burton. He figured prominently in the last worldwide leadership training broadcast. He's really cool and has lots of good stories.
How about another former BYU president joining the twelve (Elder Bateman)? Elder Uchtdorf tells some pretty good airplane stories...and we know how much time the twelve spend flying around the world...

I'm holdin' out for my mission president, now in a quorum of Seventy, Elder Gordon T. Watts. I just remember thinking what a great apostle he'd make. But I'm sure a lot of people think that about their mission presidents. And not that I particularly expect him to be chosen either.
Wow. I was shocked by both. I'm not sad; well only for thier families.
I remember President Hinckley challenging someone to a dual in General Conference. Anyone remember that?
