My parents have owned Samoyeds (a type of dog) for 27 years now. 2 years ago, the breeder contacted us saying there was this man near us who was 96 and wanted to experience birthing a litter of puppies before he died and he wanted to breed our male with his female. We don't do the breeding thing, but his story was sad and we would get to keep a puppy. [Smile] Turns out the old man was George Cornell, as in Cornell University.

So they have the puppies, and my parents and I visit with George often until he dies. His dogs were willed to his housekeeper, who he bought a house and a car for simply to take care of his dogs. He also, being a billionare, left his dogs and the litter of puppies with trust funds, which are large enough to provide the dogs with $15,000 a year until they die. The way it works is she would submit the bills to the trustees and get the money back. Now this housekeeper was submitting bills for a bit over a year when they became suspicious of fraud. Aware of my parents' relations with George, they called us up asking us to check on the status of the dog. So they do, and the dog was being neglected and abused, forced to sleep in a crate covered in his own urine and fecal matter. The urine has stained his normally white fur yellow. He hadn't had his nails cut or been brushed in over a year, so he couldn't walk. He was malnourished and, according to the vet, deprived of oxygen at a time. The housekeeper was turning in fraudulent weekly grooming bills and keeping the money for herself. The trustees denied her any further money, and, not interested in the dog anymore, she gave it to us.

Horrible, huh? So why am I trapped in my room? Samoyeds are pack dogs descendent from wolves, so males don't get along with other males most of the time. So my dog and George's dog have to always be separated behind a closed door (they have already growled and tried to go at each other, but they are so sweet individually.)

On Wednesday he is going to be relocated to my sister's home in Pennsylvania. <--happy ending.

Just thought I'd share this horrid story because it makes me so sad. Go hug your pets.

I'm so glad they found the poor dog. Who knows what might have happened if they didn't?

Someone who doens't have even a little bit of compassion for living beings...

My grandparents have a dog - I don't remember how old he is - and I just love playing with him ! He's not a pure breed, but he's lovely the way he is. [Big Grin]

Even so, I can understand not liking dogs, or cats, or whatever. But from there to treating them that bad...

[The Wave] for responsible pet owners !

I know this isn't quite related to what you said, but this statement prompted me to express my uneasyness with breeding. There are so many fantastic dogs out there without homes, and I'm not sure I like the idea of purposefully bringing more into the world. Although I'd be a hypocrite because I love all my parents' dogs so much who were purebreds.

Abusing an animal for the money! Grrrr. Even if the lady was going to be dishonest and keep most of it, she still could have afforded to treat the dog well!

Feh. It's easy to dislike people. Animals, now - it takes a disturbed person to hurt an animal.

*shudders*

Oh, and thanks! I've been on a little while (my mom is Farmgirl) but I haven't posted (or even read the stuff) for at least a month because I've been busy with work and I recently went on a mission trip, so yeah. But I'm back! [Big Grin]

I picked up on another thread about your mom, how cool. And I know this is incredibly OT, but I'm really interested to know what these mission trips are that I'm reading so much about? I know it has to do with your religion, but I don't know much more than that.

Do you want me to reply in this thread? It would kinda change the subject, but I will if you want me to.

Ours was more of a work mission instead of the usual evangelizing missions trip. If you want to know more, you can email me at the address in my profile.

I'm so glad that you're helping the dog out. I've never understood people who can be so unfeeling when it comes to animals. Thanks for seeing to it that he's going to have a happy home now. [Smile]

I get so upset when I hear about abused animals. [Mad]

I'm so glad that your family was able to rescue that poor dog from its abusive situation. [Smile]

Aw you guys are so kind. I lost a little bit of my faith in humanity when this happened, I admit.

Actually, the abused dog and my dog are brothers from the very same litter. And they still can't get along, heh, go figure.

That's not too surprising for males to not get along and even to not remember being brothers. Because we as humans hold such importance on these matters, we sometimes are surprised when higher, intelligent animals don't.

That's true Beverly.

Am I breaking the "newcomers shouldn't post too much at first" rule that I read about on the Newbie FAQ thread? lol. I am a returning Hatracker...does that make it any better?

I think that "rule" is just a suggestion to keep new people from jumping without looking into things we ahve already covered, or to keep them from being offended if we ignore comments from someone we don't know at first.

There isn't really a "rule", you know...

Welcome back!

You've been fine. I did the very same thing when I first arrived and I've been crazy since. I think it just let people know that I was here to stay, and they just had to deal with me like it or not. [Evil Laugh]

I'm so glad this has a happier ending. Sigh, I know breeder who had one of her dogs end up like this. Fortunately he was rescued, and now has a happy home. Sometimes no matter now hard you try to pick the right people for your dogs there isn't anything you can do.

The "rules" are only an issue to the curmudgeony type. [Smile] Post as much as your little heart desires.

BTW... who were you in your former Hatrack life?

Darn, I'm still in my young foolish teen years. [Big Grin] Although, I'm rather enjoying my foolish teen years. Especially since I have you guys to talk to! I hardly ever run out of at least semi-intelligent conversation! [Wink]
