As soon as I got home, my starting page at www.terra.com.br showed this . Translating (if you didn't use google yet) it means that the American delegation was received with some applauses and a lot of booing.

Than, I checked CNN, since Terra is a Brazilian/Spanish corporation, and it would be nice to see an American opinion about this.

Here I got this:

quote:
Huge cheers went up for the Afghanistani team, returning to Olympic competition after an eight year absence, and for the competitors from the Pacific atolls of Kiribati, which makes its Olympic debut. The Iraqi and U.S. teams also received warm receptions.

I wasn't at home during the Olympics opening (I'll watch it tomorrow, on tape), but I'd like to know...which is more acurate? CNN or Terra? Were the American athletes booed or not?

The American Atheletes were not booed, although the newsreader covering what I was watching (CBC), seemed to think there might be. There was a slight rise in the general noise for the Americans, and it wasn't noticably a 'boo', so I assumed it was a cheer. There was much more of a cheer, however, for Afghanistan and Iraq. They all recieved a warm reception from what I heard.

I'm on the West Coast and NBC broadcast of the opening ceremony begins in two minutes. I'm soooo excited. [Big Grin]

I'm on the west coast, too, and the opening ceremonies are still in process for us (sometimes being nearly on the tail end of all the time zones is so frustrating [Razz] ). I didn't notice any boos for the US athletes when they entered the stadium, and it seemed like they got a pretty loud ovation. Not nearly as loud as for the Afghanis or the Iraqis, though. Although, the way I figure it, the folks from those two nations deserve the recognition. The Afghanis hadn't been allowed to compete while the Taliban was in power, so to even field a team is quite an accomplishment. And from what the commentator said, the Iraqi team had to be airlifted out of the country in secrecy, I guess for fear that somebody might shoot at them.

Some thoughts on the opening ceremony....

That is not just a statute, its a transformer!

Does that fake bull have to be anatomically correct.

Christian god(s) are clearly more boring than Greek gods, and thus less deserving of cool parade carts.

That pregnant chick is hot. Where's Justin Timberlake when you need him?

No boos for the Americans. But Cuba did get a bigger ovation than we did. What's up with that?

Leave it to the Chinese athletes to talk on the cell phone while the world's eyes are on them.

Bob Costas clearly thought his basic knowledge of NBC basketball is enough to entertain us through three hours of the march of athletes.

Is it just me or did the NBC camera crew have an uncanny eye for hot athletes? (Italy, Argentina, France, and Canada has some major hotties).

If there was no booing to the U.S. athletes, why would Terra lie about that? They usually are not that biased. Let me check what news agency they use to get their news...

Reuters / Efe.

Hmm...

Well...I hate biased news. I'll watch the opening today and judge for myself.

I think the general perception among the American press is that the US team received a very warm reception. During the NBC broadcast, Bob Costas commented that the Greeks have legitimate reasons to dislike U.S. foreign policy, but added that Greeks dislike America but like Americans.

Here's another take:

quote:
And the crowd applauded and roared for them all. They cheered the team everyone wants to beat, the Americans, who arrived dressed in casual dress with short-sleeved jerseys of the sort you might find on a really classy softball team topped by blue berets. And Team USA returned the cheers by doing something utterly uncharacteristic of America’s delegations to recent Olympics — they refrained from all displays of flag-waving, camera hogging, posing and preening, limiting themselves to big smiles and happy waves to the crowd.

But forget the United States, Greece even welcomed Turkey, a country with which it has historically greeted with the same enthusiasm 6-year-olds show for Brussels sprouts, with a great roar, a priori proof that Athens is hopelessly — and joyously — besotted with the Olympic spirit.
