CT, a dear friend of mine just had her baby. He's 4 weeks early, though a hearty weight of 6lbs 11oz. He has a problem though, and they have him in NICU. The issue, as told by my husband, is that his heart is pushing his blood through in the wrong direction. My husband seemed to understand that this was not abnormal before birth, but after birth, was dangerous. Have you heard of this? Is this something you know anything about? Hubby wasn't long on details. Can you direct me to more info so I can be as helpful as possible before I go see my friends at the hospital (on Friday, likely, since I'm in Buffalo this week...)? Thank you!!

My cousin's daughter had that as well (she was premature). The drugs worked, so she didn't have a surgery. If it is the PDA, it's not open heart surgery as the vessel links two blood vessels right by the heart, not inside the heart. But no one likes to hear "heart" and "surgery" in the same sentence with "baby".

I see that CT's message is missing (?), but I wanted to thank her for the information she left. Little Jacob is going to be fine. He did have that one hole in his heart that she said closes on its own, and it has closed on its own. [Smile] Now it's a matter of getting his lungs a little more developed, which is getting better every day. He may be able to come home in another week or so! Yay!

(Tick, I'm going to be out in Buffalo several more weeks in the future -- not next week, though, we're taking a family road trip to Mt. Rushmore -- probably after Labor Day. Are you very far from there?)

jeni, I live fair smack in Buffalo. Technically, in Kenmore, which is two streets over from the Buffalo line. [Wink]
