I have a new computer. woohoo. its a Sony Vaio with a Pentium 3.0 processor, GEFORCE 6800 graphics card, 160 gig goodness, a gig of ram, and a DVDRW as well as a second DVD drive.

woohoo!

i am a happy boy. i have internet at home now. and i have a machine capable of playing DOOM 3 on the high setting (haven't tried ultimate yet).

so, yea. i just have one concern. i think the graphics card i opted to get with it might not be cooling enough. it has 2 fans built onto the card, but it suggests at least a 300W power supply. i only have 266W. but its running. is this cause for concern.
i used to know crap like this but in recent years i unlearned as much computer stuff as possible.

so...yea...

If the card is running, then it is getting enough juice. The slightly too small power supply might cause the power supply itself to burn up, but not the card.

If you think the PS is too hot, you could try cooling it, but really the best bet would be to just get one that has more guts.

However, it sounds like it's probably not necessary at the moment.

Oh, and congrats on your new machine.

How do you pronounce VAIO?

Upgrade your PSU or you're going to start getting problems, most likely.

Ya, that vid card is gonna drain your power when you're doing graphic intensive stuff like Doom3, if you had a gf2mx200 I'd say otherwise though...but if you had a gf2mx in a p4 3ghz...you've got a nice server, not a gaming machine.

How much would it cost to upgrade the power supply?

i don't need a gaming machine, the only game i'm interested in is Doom 3. and it looks great on high setting and runs smooth as can be. after calling sony and talking to them they told me i had an option of upgrading my power supply but it wasnt really necessary (the thing about sony is they make their systems custom sized. a standard size power supply doesnt fit, i have to order from them. but they told me that it was nothing to worry about, if i had a high end sound card i should be concerned but as long as this is it for now, it will work just fine. i've run the game for 4 hours with no problems and my hardware monitor is reporting everything as A-OK so i am not too concerned.)
