We have this hen house on our property. It is old and shabby looking (peeling paint) but serviceable.

A neighbor down the street wants to buy it, because her kids are interested in raising chickens for the eggs. About how much might it be worth? (I'd just be glad if the neighbor would haul the [Mad] ed thing away, because it's an eyesore, but my DH wants to make sure we get a fair price for it.)

Depends on size and features, eBay has them listed between £30/$50 to £250/$400, with everything over £75/$120 appearing to be new. Personally, I'd just ask the neighbor what s/he is willing to pay. And accept the offer if it seems even vaguely reasonable: with the proviso that the hen house must be taken off your property within a very short period of time.

Life is too short and space is too valuable to waste hoarding junk. And making life easier for your neighbors has its own reward.

Maybe make a deal with the kids directly: they pay off the hen house with fresh eggs.
It's easy to find out what a freerange egg costs at the market to set a total number of eggs to be paid. Make a business eggcounting book for the kids [Big Grin] Double entry: how many eggs they have paid you, and how many eggs they still owe.
Or if they are older & more sophisticated, they could choose to follow the ups&downs of (local grocery) market prices to set the value of individual egg payments against what is owed in a cash economy deal. If you are a gardener, perhaps you would be interested in purchasing organic chicken manure&bedding compost/fertilizer as part of the payment plan.

Just make sure that they have the option of keeping over half of the eggs while making payments. Ya don't wanna engage in eggstortionate business practices.

Yozhik,

Well, as someone who is in the process of building a hen house right now, let me tell you it isn't cheap for the lumber, etc.! [Wink]

However, to estimate value, you would have to say more about what size/type it is. There are a lot of different sizes. Peeling paint isn't a problem, but is it rotting anywhere? Is it portable (on runners, or are they having to pull it off a foundation? Etc. Etc.

I like aspectre's idea also.

I'm about to undertake a bit of a battle here, however, as my neighbor across the street has a henhouse in their yard - in a town that explicitly prohibits them by way of at least four municipal ordinances, not including the nuisance and noise-control laws. I honestly didn't realize that was what the shed along the property line in their yard was until I heard the rooster..... 5 days running..... Strange thing, though, I always thought that roosters only crowed in the early mornings? This one "goes off" at dusk!
