I enjoyed the heck out of it, as did all my Gen X buds. Hit all the right buttons with us. The production design is gorgeous, the action a hoot and hackneyed plot and characters rounded out the experience. Good times.

It sounds like such a hoot. I've developed an appreciation for Jude Law after his appearance on the Actor's Studio, too.

I absolutely loved it. Okay, yes, Jude Law, sigh...fawn…yada yada.
Now Giovanni Ribisi...oh yeah! I'm beginning to fall for that man more every time I see him. He’s so darn cute.
Yeah, maybe the characters were a little underdeveloped. So what if there was really no visible bad guy to hate.
It was fun and it was different.
I walked in that theatre sat down and became lost to the real world for almost two hours. Any movie than can completely highjack my brain and senses, okay maybe only my senses, gets four stars in my book.

I'm definately going to get the Soundtrack! That music was just gorgeous -- especially the french horn sounds. I stayed through all the credits and it said the soundtrack will be released by Sony....

Ha - yes, I noticed that too.. I caught a couple of other minor "bloopers" but won't reveal them here until everyone else has had a chance to see it...
But the bloopers weren't annoying, just kind of amusing.

In brief: All style, no substance. All setting, little plot.
What's good: The concept of a retro movie about the future. The flying. The animation.
What's bad: The introduction of plot elements that were never explained. Plot holes. The predictability. The ending.

I can imagine them discussing this, and deciding that the average movie-watcher just wouldn't know what the "Great War" was, so they just decided to go ahead and call it WWI.

This was a great story - very fun, very clean. Every movie cliche in the book, but it was all done so sincerely that it was okay. I liked it.
However... *********Semi-Spoilers and Full-bodied Ranting********
I HATED their relationship. I'm still not sure if that was supposed to be romantic, but if it was, I don't see how it possibly could be. She spent the movie running after him begging for love and attention, and he spent the movie putting her down, dissing her for another girl, and basically treating her like crap. In what universe is that romantic? When I realized what was going to happen in the very last scene (not the final line, but the event leading up to it), I wanted to shake her. He doesn't love you, girl. And he proved it - with the final line. Yes, it was hilarious, but, once again, at her expense. Polly does not come off as an endearing character, and that really annoyed me.

Kat - All those cliche's and their relationship, it seemed to me that those were all fitting in with an antiquated Hollywood version of love from the 40's. She needs him but pretends she doesn't, he shows he loves her by not leaving her permanently and small, never saying it but leaving unspoken clues, etc...
I think the entire movie was suppose to be like opening some time capsule. When we got out of the theatre, my dad couldn't believe how much he'd been taken back to when he was a little kid. He said, "That's exactly the kind of movie I was watching when I was eight years old." I asked, "But the way you wished it would be, with cooler effects?" He said, "Exactly."

**************SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE DISCUSSED BELOW***********
I still don't like the relationship, though. I'd buy that he couldn't quite express his affection except he seemed to do a just-fine job of it with Frankie. They had palpable chemistry, shared jokes, obviously trusted one another, and practically fell into each other as soon as they met in person.
With Polly, he consistently ignored her, rained on her parade, and dropped like her like an ant-infested donut as soon as Frankie came in sight. That's not a man struggling with how to express his feelings - that's the action of a man who knows that he can treat the girl like crap and suffer zero consequences from it.
The only time he kissed her was when he needed to soften her up/distract her from his preparations to punch her. That big moment where they stepped onto the Shock-o-Floor? She took his hand. All the gooey romantic moments between them consisted of her thinking something was happening and him ignoring her. After the thirteenth time that happens, you gotta think it's about time to take him at his word.
The one indication was the reflection in the water - that was kind of cute. Subtle enough that I didn't even catch it.
Kat: I absolutely, 100%, agree with you, and I said as much to Shigosei, Feyd, and Jesse when we came out of the theatre. The only way they could make that relationship work is by making her a lot more contemptable than she had to be, ie "I sabotaged your plane." Through the whole movie I was thinking "*I* would have been outta there a long time ago, sister."

. . . but I agree -- they made both of them very "manipulative" people -- so we really didn't get attached to either one of them. It was like they deserved each other......

Maybe that's what bothered me about the movie?
******************SPOILERS - SORRY, AGAINST THE TITLE, BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO START ANOTHER THREAD**********
It was a retro-style movie with ironic cheesy graphics and plot, but the heroes were definitely anti-heroes at best, whiny manipulators at worst who needed to be in a much darker story and have an arc. Polly looked the part perfectly, but she was as dumb as a bag of hammers. Hmm....a phlanx of humongous robots are coming straight at me. I can (1) duck into a side building, (2) go down a manhole into the sewer - yucky, but protected, or (3) zig zag back and forth straight into the path of the robots. Definitely option 3. Also, SHE CUT HIS FUEL LINE?? And that's supposed to be a forgivable infraction? Don't people DIE when their plane plunges to the ground after abruptly losing fuel? She's not a ticked-off girlfriend; she's psychotic!
. . . . . . . yeah -- but she was mad because he cheated on her with Frankie! (and Frankie, by my opinion, was way more woman than that shallow man can ever handle)! Cheated-on women sometimes do very mad things. . . . **************end spoiler**********************

Mad, understandable. Yelling, throwing things, burning his favorite shirt, all understandable. Homicidal, and she's about irredeemable. If she's redeemable at all, we didn't see it that movie. Jeez Louise.
Also, that moment when he pulls the "look into my eyes, you can totally trust me, I'm going to take advantage of your desire to believe me so I can lie to you through my teeth" bit, I was so dissapointed.

*******SHHHHPOILERS******* . . . . . . . . . Jes said the thing that annoyed him most was how she was relatively calm as the plane was crashing into the water, ala:
"Pull up. We'll never make it. Pull up, Joe."
But when she found out he hadn't told her about the amphibian qualities of the plane, THEN she freaks out, ala:
"I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DIDN'T TELL ME! I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO DIE!!!!"
Umm, she didn't seem that worried about death before. Suddenly it's a big deal?

Oh, I never thought of that. I just had this picture in my head of her climbing on the outside of the plane while it was flying in midair and Joe blissfully oblivious to everything going on. It wouldn't have been that unbelievable considering the storyline.
Maybe they should have said she punctured the tank or something. Would that blow up the plane?
