We moved into our new house over the weekend (yes, during the hurricane) and are still waiting to get the phone service transferred to the new house. Because there seems to be a problem with the line, they have to schedule a tech to come out. We are now on their schedule for October 27. Even with damage from the storm, I think 1 month is a bit much.
Last week, BellSouth decided to help us by transferring the phone over a week early. Of course, no one was in the house at that time, so we asked them to move it back. That took 3 days to accomplish. Moving becomes more difficult when you have no phone to schedule and confirm movers, new appliances, furniture, etc.
So, I am displeased with my service, or lack there of, from BellSouth and would like to consider alternatives.

We use Vonage for our phone service, and it's been working great. We only pay $17 a month, with taxes, for our local and long distance plan. Much better than the landline companies we'd been using before.

We haven't had any problems with it since we allowed it to use up a little more bandwith than the default allocation. We don't hear any crackling or delays or anything. The only difference between it and any other phone that anyone notices is that you have to dial 1 and the area code for every number you call, including local. You get used to that pretty quickly, though.
If you want to sign up, let me know and I'll send you a referral email that gives both of us a free month.
Edit: I went ahead and sent you the email, anyhow. Their email server seem to be going pretty slowly right now.
