What do you think? Would anyone be interested in participating in a national no-techonology day with me?
The purpose: To learn that existence is possible and even fulfilling without technology. Rather than being anti-technology, the aim is simply to further appreciation of the non-technological parts of our existance.
The rules: One entire day must be spent without using cars, telephones, computers, televisions, or radios. I understand that anything man-made is technically "technology," but here we're aiming for electronics. Basically, live like you're Amish for a day.
The reason: I was walking on campus, listening as I often do when I walk to a portable CD player. An older man walking near me got my attention and I took my headphones off. "Listen," he said. Nearby, an entire tree was full of birds singing. "That's better than any rock & roll," he smiled. Now, I like my music as much as anyone and have nothing against rock & roll; however, I think it would be nice to take break from it to better appreciate the world around us.

What about things like lightbulbs, electric stovetops, refrigerators, and heating/air conditioning systems?

What zgator said. As in, no hot showers, running water, refrigeration or hot food. As in, only candle light after dark.
Can you tell I had no power over the weekend?
In some ways,yes, it was nice and relaxing. Didn't have to worry about what was going on in the outside world, really, and the inside world had been restricted to the essentials.
On the other hand, hot water feels real good and people can get real funky after not showering for one day.

My parents have pretty much seen the eye of 3 hurricanes pass over them. This time they only lost power for a couple of hours. Most of the people I know here in Orlando either didn't lose power or only lost it for a short period.
Storm, I'm guessing you didn't get hit real bad during Charley and Frances. But you've had you're trees cleaned out now. You should be fine for the next one. Let me know in 2 weeks how you do.

I was at my brother's over the weekend, who is in Altamonte. He lost power for longer periods of time from the last two, when I was about 60 miles north and basically away from most of the winds. So, I didn't lose power then. As has been noted, most of the natural stuff that could go down had already basically been blown down.

My new home has underground lines. I like underground lines.
We have no trees over 15 feet anyway. The tree in the front yard got blown over when the winds were blowing north to south. The next morning, the south to north winds picked it up straight.

Heh Heh heh. I just realized that a few years ago a city near us voted not to bury its power lines, and they were without power for 3 days after the 36 inch snow we had last winter.

By the end of the day, I would be driven totally insane. I couldn't hack it. I'm an artificial person, and I live in a synthetic world.

If we made it a week, we may remember what existence is. Once the novelty wore off, the only thing left would be to think about that which matters. Then again, it's kind of nice to have refrigerators.
I'm not anti-technology. I do believe that we've gone a little far, so much that people aren't even people anymore, they are human resources.

Um, yeah. And why don't we have an NO-GRAVITY day. To learn that we can do just fine WITHOUT FREAKING GRAVITY!! And then a national NO AIR day! See how fulfilled you will feel without AIR!!! Yeah! You go first!

Annie, what do you consider technology? Are you going to sleep naked outside? Build a lean-to shelter? That's technology. Are you going to eat food that was shipped in trucks to a grocery store? That was grown on farms? That's ag tech. Are you going to drink water that was treated in a water treatment plant? Are you going to read a book? All of this is extremely high technology. Are you going to wear wear clothes? Listen to music? Play an instrument? Put a bandaid on a cut? Use eating utensils?
How can you harsh on technology? You are a homo sapiens. Technology is what we do for a living, the way a lion hunts and a panda eats bamboo.
Choose which technology you like to use and use only what brings you the most joy. But don't harsh on technology as a whole. Doing that is like committing suicide and murdering everyone.

I'm just imagining being able to strip away extraneous technology for a bit. REmembering to do some things for ourselves.

Tatiana, while I agree with your thoughts on technology as a whole, she was clear that she meant only electronics, in her very first post. So I don't think you're being fair.

I guess I get sensitive about poor technology that works so hard for us and takes so much abuse from everyone.

It was weird when the power was out for Ivan. I slept a lot. It was sort of nice in a way I guess. But I missed everybody a bunch.
