Tool is by far my favorite band. The first CD I ever bought was their 2001 release Lateralus, which perhaps is their best album yet. I highly recommend the song "Lateralus" for non-fans to sample .
Tool isn't my favorite just because of their awesome, thought-provoking, carefully planned music. Their actions as a band are truly commendable. The wikipedia entry for Tool is as follows:
quote: Tool was formed in 1990 by vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Paul d'Amour, and drummer Danny Carey. They are a contemporary American rock band whose music includes elements of heavy metal, progressive rock, psychedelia and art rock.
Indicative of their varied and far-reaching influences (chiefly King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, and Progressive Rock Bands Pink Floyd, and Rush), their music features complex harmonic structures, unconventional time signatures, and borderline New Age subject matter. They may be the only popular musical group to have recorded songs about the mutation of DNA and geometric plane curves. Paul d'Amour left the band in 1995 and was replaced by Justin Chancellor of the UK band Peach in time for Tool's 1996 album Ænima.
Tool has long clashed with conventional television and radio due to their dark musical content and dry disposition: their first single from Ænima was at first shortened for radio play by broadcasting companies until overwhelming fan response compelled them to play the track uncut. The music video for that single, "Stinkfist," was consequently renamed by MTV America because of the title's suggestive nature to "Track #1." Though their Ænima singles received heavy radio play, their 2001 release Lateralus featured songs that averaged six and a half minutes in length, unwieldy for even the most pioneering of commercial radio disc jockeys. Additionally, the length of their most recent music video for the song "Parabola" clocked in at an unheard of ten and a half minutes, almost condemning it from being aired on mainstream music channels. Compounded with their aversion to appearing in their own music videos, these aspects of their collective personality makes the band's popularity especially peculiar.
Tool are currently working on their fourth full length album which is expected to be released by this year's end or the first quarter of 2005. Tourmates Fantômas and Meshuggah were cited as influences.
Many stories and rumours circulate this band, and they've been known to incite rumours themselves, encouraging fans and listeners to think for themselves.
"They may be the only popular musical group to have recorded songs about the mutation of DNA and geometric plane curves." How awesome is that?
So, since this may be my last post on Hatrack, I advise that if you haven't listened to Tool, give them a chance to inspire you too.
[anticipation]Or, you can wait for their next album to come out, it should be out late this year, or early next year![/anticipation]
Edit: And they have quite an interesting website, at least the "Dissectional" half. -> http://toolband.com

Look at his post count: 999. He fears getting to 1000?! He didn't write a landmark and fears that it will take him forever to write one?!
And more to the point of the thread: I haven't heard of them, but they seem interesting enough that I'll consider looking them up. (Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin references, mmmmmm...)
About not being aired because of the length of the songs: yeah, we like them short now, don't we? When I was in France there was one radio show that started at midnight on RTL2. The guy in charge of it used to start many of his nights with a Pink Floyd song, and I've caught Shine on You Crazy Diamond several times... Dreamy...

Tool is indeed an awesome band. I had heard Lateralus and knew they were great, but until you got me to really listen to them again, I didn't appreciate just how great they really are. They're surpassing Radiohead as my favorite band of all time.
I know lots of hatrackers love Tool. Nearly all the ones who know the most about music, in fact, and care a whole lot about music. Those of you who haven't heard them, or who haven't listened closely and given them a chance to grow on you, I urge you to do that. They are incredible. The whole CD Lateralus is incredible. I can't listen to it often enough.

I LOVE TOOL. Especially the song H which goes well with a scene from HP4. Seriously, it does. They have clever lyrics, Maynards voice is buttery and they are one of the best modern American bands out there!

Yes, kai, I agree with Eduardo Sauron who is quite a wise fellow. PLEASE keep posting! Your humor and playfulness here on hatrack are like rain on the leaves. Your fluff threads are so much fun for everyone, and your serious posts are always wise, thoughtful, and sincere. Your courtesy and respect for others is an example of the very best that hatrack can possibly be. My only complaint about your posting is that you don't post nearly enough! Quit wasting time talking to that silly Tatiana girl on aim and post more on hatrack so that everyone gets the benefit of your awesomeness!

Maynard James Keenan is one of the few true geniuses writing rock music today, whether it's with tool, a perfect circle, or any other sideproject he does.
Also, keep posting, all tool fans are welcome here.

Tis sad when a person leaves, and though I've pretty much disappeared from hatrack (because of an actual social life at school), tis nice to have a group of people that you don't really see that you can poke at every once in a while. Anyway, that's my long winded Kerry-esque way of saying "don't go...pweeze?"
