I'm considering doing a beer education thread. I'd cover history, beer styles, some light chemistry, evaluation techniques and so on. If this sounds intriguing please let me know. Not only would it be educational for those that are interested it would spur me to reacquaint myself with information that is withering from lack of use.

1. Beer is a liquid
2. Beer fights ALL the time.
3. The purpose of the beer is to flip out and kill people.

Stone IPA, yes, all the way
And an Arrogant Bastard to go
For a great taste sensation
Try a good "Ruination"
Just open the tap, let it flow.

I'm a porter (of the Ale, not Mormon, kind) and stout guy. I mean, I appreciate a good IPA or lager as much as the next boozehound, but the dark stuff is where it is at.

I've found http://www.beeradvocate.com/ a good site for beer larnin'.

Bok,
We must must go to the Moan and Dove when you come out next. We could pick up Sarah, and off we'd go. Have you been?

Stone has some great dark beers, in fact Arrogant bastard is quite dark and bitter with a VERY powerful punch.

What I want to try some time is making beer the way it was first done. Any recipes for Sumerian beer? And did you know that they made bread so they could make beer, at first?

If I'm going for a buzz, I stick to the ligh beers - otherwise I fill up to quickly.

For taste, I'll try anything once. I've developed a liking for Fosters.

I love Young's Double Chocolate Stout, especially. Also the beer Kama brought over (the pressurized can one) was an especially decent brew.

I have some Smuttynose Pumpkin ale that's fairly mediocre.

Elizabeth, I will have to do a bit of research before I can answer your question with confidence. There is some debate over the origination of beer but I include this link which supports your post.

Elizabeth, if you ever come out this way, and I'll introduce you to RedBones, "southern" Bar-B-Q, but more importantly, almost 2 dozen beers on tap! Also featuring cask-conditioned beers, upscale Belgians ($10+ for a bottle), a good mix of beers.

I would love a beer thread. I pretty much know what beers I've had that I like, but I'm not so good at finding new beers to try. I pretty much know that I like ales, but that's about it.

And I live across the street from the greatest mini-mart ever. Their beer selection is better than that of many liquor stores I've seen.

Sure! I'd be interested! I'm also pretty well in the ale category, but I find the different processes and ingredients fascinating.

My previous boss used to grow his own hops and experiment and I loved to hear what he had tried.

Yay, beer thread!!

I have a question... I want to know why, when I'm perfectly capable of tasting all sorts of delicate flavors and nuances in a wide variety of styles, I completely miss whatever makes Duvel so special? I mean, I can appreciate the quality of, say, the Duchess, even if I can't stand the taste, but with Duvel, all I taste is bubbles, some hops, and a faint lemony flavor. And I'm pretty sure that's not all there is to it. [Smile]

Myself, I'm a Guinness gal. I'm half Irish, so it is obligatory. The Texan half of me will have a Shiner Bock now and again. Found a pub by the house that has $3 pints of Guinness EVERYDAY. Guess where we were Friday night??

I like most of the Stone Brewery stuff, except the Shakespeare Stout. Too intense.
Beleive it or not, I do NOT like the taste of chocolately beer.
I am very partial to Pike Brewery.

I like Heineken. Other than that I'll stick to my hard liquors, both strait and mixed. My personal favorite is vodka and blue power aid. mmm-mmm good

Oh ya, will there be a hang-over unit in this course? [Monkeys]

What gave it away, the vodka and blue Powerade comment? [Wink]

I'm turning into a more discriminating beer drinker, but really, I'll down anything that's not the Beast. Or Pabst. I enjoy the dark beers, but there is something to be said for the Leinie's Honey Weiss.

Hey Megan, if you ever want to go drinking around B-town, let me know. [Monkeys]

And I learned the Powerade trick from my sixth grade teacher.

Vodka is a wonderfully ubiquitous liquor. [Big Grin]

Dude. You are a year younger than my baby sister. The only way I'm drinking with someone illegal is if I'm related to them.

Not to mention that I do generally try to abide by laws...and with the recent busts on underage drinking in town...and the whole providing a minor with alcohol...

[No No]

Also, I don't drink that much, and when I do, it tends to be at home,...cause in a group, I'm usually the DD. I do, however, like a beer on occasion...hence my interest in this thread.

Hmmm is your younger sister atractive?

Does she come to visit you often?

Does she need a new drinking buddy?

Oh, and the busts are normal for this early in IU's School year, in case you haven't noticed, none of the local teens have been busted yet this year. We're smart enough to avoid frat parties and what not. [Taunt]

But I'd be more than happy to take your sister to one [Razz]

JT, with that sort of attitude, you'll never be introduced to my sister. Ever. [Big Grin]

She's very cute. But I'm eight years older than her and VERY protective. If you can behave yourself like a good gentleman, I MIGHT consider introducing you to her when she comes to visit.

And under NO CIRCUMSTANCES would she be going to any frat parties!

Don't make me use the nono icon again!

You really want to let your sister meet him? Wait untill you meet him to make this decision. The local teens never do get caught do they(well our sadd president got a DUI, but that's about it)?

edit to add: he is a wonderful gentleman and I would share the information as to where he lives but I couldn't find it for the life of me.

My beer tastes are kind of all over the place. If it's hot out and I want something refreshing I'll go for a Stella Artois or a Kirin Ichiban. I prefer Murphy's to Guinness. The beer I most often buy for home is Bass. The beer I like best on draft is probably Boddington's. I think my favorite beer ever was this local porter I had at a pub in Monterey called Penny Black Porter. It was served cask-style, which was interesting.

dpr, I'm pretty sure the Shakespeare Stout is made by Rogue, not Stone. The breweries use the same type of bottle, though, so I thought the same thing myself once. [Smile]

<--- thinks people who hate all beers because they tried Bud once and didn't like it deserve to have their underwear hiked up over their heads.

I would like to point out that the Sunset Grill and Tap has... over 100 beers on tap.

Beer-y-licious ness.

They have the largest, and best, collection of beers in Boston, and probably new england.
