Readthis article this article about D&D's third year aniversary at CNN. It's amazing figuring that it was created in the 70's. When I started blaying, back in 1990, almost nobody knew it in Brazil, hehehe. Ah, the joys living in a third-world country [Wink] .

Anyway...I would like to know other Hatrack gamers, when did you start playing, if you still play, if you know other RPGs or just D&D, etc.

Gamers of the world, unite! And let's hail Gary Gygax! [Big Grin]

I probably started playing in 1979/1980, before I graduated high school in 1981.

I am still playing, in Slash's Overlook game, as well as starting in a new local game next Friday.

I actually new one of the people who helped write the 2nd Edition DM Guide. He did the ship damage charts. He did this while in high school. Look in the credits of that book and you will see Sean Cleary.

My best guess for when I was playing D&D is 1978-1979. I had a lot more time on my hands then. [Wink]

Started in 1980 and am still part of a regular gaming group.

I've even got a publishing credit from one of the gaming magazines.

I played some really juvenile D&D games in junior high.

During my last two years in high school a friend of mine formed a gaming group, and we started going to gaming conventions. We played AD&D 2nd Edition.

At the same time, a friend unloaded to me his collection of MERP (Middle-Earth Role-Playing) and Rolemaster books. I never got to play a campaign using this system, but I was fascinated by the realism of it. But that's OK. The system was too complicated, and was probably unplayable.

Many years later, out of curiosity, I downloaded the D&D 3E books and started reading the rules. I was flabbergasted. It was almost as though they had taken my favorite parts of AD&D 2E and Rolemaster and combined them into one game.

I tried to get a few games going, but it never really happened until twinky got his PBEM game going, which I am playing now.

[Big Grin]

And yeah, I've played some tabletop D&D before. I'm having fun times in my PBEM game. [Smile]

My parents were against D&D, so I told them I wouldn't play it.

Then I got into Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books.

That led to similar books that used dice and simple character sheets.

Then my best friend starting creating his own simple RPGs, and we played those.

Then the same friend received Basic D&D for his birthday. Of course we began playing immediately. He got the next two difficulties for his next two birthdays. Soon we were even playing at my house, and my parents didn't care anymore.

Then I heard about Iron Crown Enterprise's Middle Earth Role Playing system, and I had to have it. It about bankrupted me to spend the twenty bucks to buy the thing, and even then I had to borrow a couple of dollars from my little brother.

Right toward the end of my RPG days, I came across I.C.E.'s Cyberpunk (Cyberspace?) RPG, based on its Rolemaster(?) system.

In all those years, we never really played by all the rules. It was mostly hack-and-slash, and without a lot of the "role-playing" aspect that seems to carry the serious gamers through into their adult years. My favorite part was always building new characters, so I had dozens of characters that I just never got around to playing.

My 13 year old son picked up my old 2nd Ed. books about a year ago and I suddenly became really cool. He could not get enough of them. He would sit in his room, rolling up characters and them come out and tell us about them.(Luckily Mom also played a bit of D&D so whe was familiar with most of the terms. He bought the V3.5 Players Book a while back and he and I will be playing in our first live game in about a week. In fact here is a link to the web site the lady hosting the game has for it.

He is so excited.

I completely understand. I started playing in grade school. I don't remember what grade, but I was young enough to still go on a field trip to a paper factory and got one of those huge rolls of paper. The ones that are almost as big as a 4th grader that you use in middle school to decorate walls.

I struggled to get it home. As I started to unroll it, I made the best castle D&D has ever seen. It was huge and intricate. I had a book on castles to help me make it.

Of course I had to defend it. I spent days making 300+ characters ranging from level 1-6. I wanted a huge battle until all but a handful survived. I was then going to have those be my main characters. When they got enough gold, I would have them buy the castle and hire guards. My brothers were good at role-playing and we had our own world, real-estate, and politics.

My brothers and friends never wanted to use my little scenario, but that is ok. It is still one of my fondest memories of D7D. [Laugh] Self

I read the handbook three years ago, at work during my breaks and actually got to play last year.

I would have played before that, but my parents told me people with no lives played that game, and it was too dangerous to randomly join a game I'd been invited to. Oddly enough, they were okay with me hanging out with people who did math for fun...dunno what was up with that

Math is a tool of the Devil.

Honestly, more people have been driven to suicide by the rigors of math than by inflexible DMs.

The token Mormon in my home town wasn't allowed to play D&D either. He got his fill by designing monsters for my campaign and was always thrilled to hear of the destruction they caused on our bus ride to school.

I started on Basic (yeah, that's right, back when Elf, Dwarf and Halfling were classes) when we were living in Europe. Over the year there I amassed quite the army of lead figures (back when they were still lead). This was in 88 or 89 I guess. We had a huge group that played in the same world for years while I was in middle school and high school. Every Friday night (like we could get dates. Actually, our dates often wound up playing.)

I began playing in or about 1979, and loved the creative aspects of it. I usually DM'd, because no one else had the patience to do any of the grunt work.

I started playing in 1983 at the age of 15. I think the group of guys I started with thought I'd be a great token female. Then I showed them that I had value in the game. I was the thief/scout for my group's various games for about 10 years or so. We started in 1st ed and moved to 2nd ed, rather reluctantly at first, then with full gusto. I played mostly in groups formed by my then husband (who DM'd) Then I got divorced.

After that, I tried my hand at DMing and found that I was pretty good at it. I ran an all girl's party for about two years. Now I run games for my children. They think I'm way cool because I know how to play. [Smile]

October 16 was supposed to be Worldwide D&D Game Day. They sent out pre-made campaigns and everything.

We were supposed to have a game where I work, but we ended up only having 4 people: me, two of my brothers, and a random guy that I can't stand. It was still fun, though. We ended up taking forever trying to open a door. The first few times, it set off a trap in out faces, and my rogue character couln't disable it because it was magical, and there was no knob or lock to pick. We finally got the idea to hold a book (with a symbol identical to one on the door) up to the door. The DM tells us that we hear a "click". Now of course we are afraid to pull the book away, thinking the trap will reset.
Me: I push the door open.
DM: It doesn't move.
Me: What!? Hmm...I turn the knob.
DM: There isn't a knob.
Me: Oh, yeah...
Dwarf: I smash it with my axe.
DM: It clangs against the door. Nothing happens.
Elf: I Magic Missile it.
DM: Nothing happens.
Me: Are there hinges?
DM: Yes, you can see hinges.
(we get someone to keep holding the book against the door, while I go over to the hinges)
Me: I pull the pins out.
DM: You can't move them.
Me: *frustrated* What!? I'll make a disable device check...
DM: It doesn't matter, you can't move the pins.
Dwarf: I smash the hinges with my axe.
DM: It makes a lot of noise, but nothing happens.
(at this point we beat against the door some more in frustration, but nothing happens)
Me: I give up, I put the book back in my bag.
DM: As you pull the book away from the door, it swings open a few inches.
*quiet pause*
Dwarf: Alright! I push it open!
DM: (now with his head in his hands) It closes.
Me: I PULL the door open!!!
DM: Finally!

It took us at least 20 minutes to fugure out that we had to *PULL* the door open, not push. [Wall Bash]

Oh, and to answer you question, I've been playing D&D for a little over a year. I was playing LotR RPG for a little while, and then a friend of ours got us into D&D, and has been running a game for us since. (and he's been playing for about 20 years)
