I will be traveling to Atlanta in a couple of weeks for some training, and I'm trying to find out what kind of weather to expect. I found a webpage that tells me the "average" temperature in ATL is ~53 degrees... but what are the highs and lows like? Does it rain much in November? Do I need to buy a heavy jacket? (for that matter, do I need to buy socks?)

Are you real yet? Do you want to be? I'm going to Maui in January, if you meet at least one other Hatracker while you're in Atlanta that'll have you covered. Of course, you could just meet two in GA, and then I would be unnecessary.

I'll be attending a training at Emory University and CDC, so I'll be staying on the east side of Atlanta. I'll be there for two weeks, including one full weekend, but I won't have a rental car. Is there a decent bus/metro system in ATL?
Thanks for the weather info, BTW.

My old stomping grounds - I can suggest a great chinese place thereabouts.
As for a good public transport system...um...nope.
Sorry, the marketing slogan is, "MARTA is smarta" - and this was the best the marketing people could manage. With a straight face.
Are you staying in accomodations on or near the campus? I know Emory has apartments near the campus for visiting guests - which are in walking distance to the CDC if you don't mind a bit of a stroll.
You can take MARTA from the airport to Edgewood/Candler Park and catch a bus from there to Emory, but I couldn't tell you which one.
However, you could go to: The MARTA website to find out specifically which bus you need from what station.
Depending on when you come in, I could pick you up from the airport, although the MARTA ride isn't bad. However, waiting at the bus station can be annoying in cold weather.

I was amused today to learn there is a "Maui Tacos" restaurant near my hotel... although I like Maui Tacos and eat there occasionally, I doubt I'll sample that one.

According the the MARTA website, there are no bus routes operating out of the airport. I assume there are taxis? (I will be on an expense account, after all).

That's more downtown - which explains why I don't recognize the restaraunt.
Not a particularly outstanding part of town, but not bad either.
It's definitely not walking distance, but the #2 runs from North Avenue station to Avondale station.
You can take the train from Avondale to Edgewood/Candler Park station which has a bus to Emory campus.

Edit: Emory, I know. I know the rough location of your hotel - more to the point, the area. There's the original Krispy Kreme store a block from your hotel.

January in Minnesota is bringing me to Maui. I actually have relatives there who own a condo that they rent out when no one in the family wants to use it... family members get a very good rate. (The management company's cleaning fees.) I never thought I'd be able to take advantage of it, because airfare is still out of my price range, but my friend Claudia travels incessantly on business, and has frequent flyer miles out the wazoo. She's providing transport, I'm providing accomadations, and we suddenly have a very affordable vacation.
Claudia has met 6 or 7 Hatrackers now, so if you don't manage to meet anyone in Atlanta I'll make her sign up before we come if you wish to be verified.

I'm from Atlanta too. But I on the other hand like MARTA. I've not had much experience with the buses, but the trains are cool.
The weather generally likes to change at whim. Right now I'm in Kentucky, and its cold so I'm starting to think that Georiga is heaven. But as for a jacket you can get away with a sweatshirt or something lighter than a peacoat. Socks, however, are unnecessary. Usually when I am home, I only start wearing real shoes until Jan. But then I'm used to it.
Have fun, I love Atlanta! ~Irish~

Yes, Dan, I'll be home before Thanksgiving.
Thanks again for all of your advice. I'll try to get in touch to make myself real while I'm there. (or at least halfway real anyway).

Ooh, hey Irish - yet another Georgian lurking around.
As for the socks and sweatshirt - uh, I don't think so. Women are always cold and you're coming in from Hawaii? Socks are a must. The sweatshirt I'll leave up to you.
If you like, I can give you my cell number for emergencies - I work during the day, but I'm usually available after 6 or so.
Failing that, enjoy the trip - the MARTA website should have all the necessary route information you need to plot your itenerary.

I have not yet been in Georgia in November, having just moved here this summer, but right now it's wavering between sweater-weather and T-shirt-with-long-pants weather; it's kind of spastic-seeming. It's been raining. I would definitely pack some warmer clothes and a jacket.
When exactly will you be here?

I didn't wear real shoes when I was in Poughkeepsie, New York until about November. Here -- Knoxville, Tennessee -- I never wear real shoes.

Oh, I forgot the easily accessible shopping spots:
1. Lennox Mall (next to the Lennox Mall train station). Is also walking distance to Phipps Mall (expensive, sorta high-end products).
Also Galyans, Target and Borders are two blocks from Lennox.
2. Decatur Square - next to Decatur MARTA train line. Some neat little restaraunts, shops and whatnot.
3. Virginia Highlands - More of the same, easily accesible from the #2 bus. A short stroll from Ponce de Leon Ave is Little 5 - geared mostly for teens, but still noteworthy as a sight.
4. Dunwoody Mall (the name escapes me) - but it's all the way up the North Line. Quite a trip, but a better selection of stores than Lennox/Phipps.
5. Underground Atlanta and the Museum of Coca-Cola: right next to Five Points MARTA station. This is the junction of the N/S-E/W lines. Overpriced tourist trap, but it's on the list of things to be fleeced by.

Edit: 6. The Atlanta High Museum of Art - I think it's off of "Arts Center" station, but don't quote me.
