Dear Hatrack Mods, Can we please have a politics board so that the rest of us can enjoy the forums without having to wade through the political muck? Maybe a test run for a month at least? Thanks for listening. Brian

disagree- What I love about hatrack is that everything is all jumbled together. (Is that short enough?)

What is the point of this forum if not to discuss matters like this? This IS the politics board... among other things.

Elections are a very important part of American culture and people's lives. I suspect that water cooler talk around the country (which is what these boards are to many of us) is going to be focused on politics for a few days. Wait it out, other topics will rise to the top soon enough.

Yeah, this forum is good just as it is. I don't really want there to be forbidden topics of conversation.

Disagree, but only 'cause I know so many other people benefit from and enjoy the political discussions here. I for one REALLY don't give a rat's behind who the president is, and I'm really tired of hearing about the election, but I'm not going to try to deprive others of their right to use the board for this kind of discussion, since clearly the majority of us want to. I'm just leaving Hatrack for about a month or however long it takes for all of this to settle down. Y'all have fun.

It's extremely easy to skip over the political threads.
The other conversations, including fluff shot into political threads, is what reminds us that we are talking to real people, what keeps the politics here at a relatively civilized level.

And -- respectfully, and I hope graciously -- Brian, you've been here less than 2 months. You are welcome as a Hatracker, don't get me wrong! But when the majority of this tightly interlaced group of friends with a long shared history want (and probably needs) to talk about a key event in, well, the topic of the forum, it might be more useful to present your idea here in a different manner.
Sure, you have every right to say it. I mean it! But it comes across as inappropriate, at least to me.
You can start your own non-political thread, you know. If people are interested, they will find you.

To ask a simple question of the mods and solicit feedback from the board? What's inappropriate about that?

Definitely disagree. Besides, when it's not, you know, the day after an election day there's hardly enough political threads TO warrant a whole forum.

I disagree, but I do have a request of topic creators...
PLEASE, actually state the subject of your post in the title! Pretty please?! It would make it so much easier to keep track of discussions if I didn't have to remember what each thread was about on my own. (There are a lot of threads!!)
For example, a post about some remark Kerry makes about Cheney's daughter (just an example!) could be:
"Oh No He Didn't!"
But it would be a lot better if it was:
"Oh No He Didn't! Kerry Uses Cheney Daughter"
See, I could see right away what the post was about... it might also help with repeated topics.
So please... think about it??? Sure would make MY life a lot easier.

The mods always feel free to delete threads. It's their board. But they don't do so unless there's a good reason to, and there certainly isn't here.
Oh, and disagree. I'm sick of the election talk, but it will settle down soon. And it's not worth a different board for a couple of weeks before and after an election.

As I said before,
quote:it might be more useful to present your idea here in a different manner.
Again, of course you had a right to ask it. (Of course!) I don't think saying something in itself was inappropriate, but I do think the way you said it was. In my humble opinion.
Rather than, effectively, "Hey, I know I'm new around here, but I don't like how this place works. The people are not talking about what I want to talk about. Could you make it over for me, so I don't have to look at it?"
You could try, "Geez, guys, there's an awful lot of political discussion, and that's throwing me for a loop. How would I best go about avoiding it? Or does this tend to go away after a few days? I don't really know, 'cause I'm new around here."
I think the latter shows more grace and courtesy, although -- again -- such is not necessary to participate here. It tends to be appreciated more, that's all.

I think it would be cool if we could have tags that showed what the post was about. But UBB doesn't support that.

But Brian, for what it's worth, I know that hatrack has all sorts of peculiarities and habits that aren't apparent on the surface. You may have a different view on what "fits" here than I do.
That's cool. My view certainly isn't the privileged one.
And thanks for being so polite about my . I feel better now.
