I just had an associate ask me, "Do you know what you type at the end of your web address that checks how many hits your webpage has had?"

There are two ways this may be possible.

1: You go to a specific web page and there is a place to type in your web address, and it lets you know how many visitors you have had.

2: You type '/"some specific extension"' at the end of your url and it lets you know how many hits you have had.

I have never heard of this, and my associate says that someone told him in a Masters class about this, but he doesn't remember how it works.

He has a web page through his company and wants to see how many hits he is getting, but because his web page is on a company template, he cannot add a counter at the bottom.

Thanks for any help. I have never heard of this and wonder if it is even possible.

I've never heard of this service, and I don't know how it would be possible without third-party software previously installed on the web server itself -- since ANY counter needs to start counting from a given moment.

There used to be a website that did this, but I don't recall exactly how it worked. I remember using it when I set up a web page back around 10 years ago, maybe a little more than that. It disappeared without notice after a couple years, though. It was something that was based at some university site - I think you set up an individual URL on the site, put the link as a counter on your own site. Then when your own page was accessed, the counter would advance, provided the site was up and/or there was a working connection between the two.

Hope this makes some kind of sense...

I don't know of any generic switch that works for all.

My web host provides some type of service where I can just add the word "stats" to the end of my URL and it shows me all this type of information. But it is something offered by the ISP that host my web page -- I doubt it is the same universally for all URLs

With my domain hosting, I get cpanel, and from there, I can access everything from adding more email addies, adding subdomains, enabling/disabling hotlinking, and so much more. Including domain and subdomain stats.

I type in http://www.laurieashton.com/cpanel and use my userid and password to login, and it's all there.

I know a whole lot of places have cpanel, but whether this dude does or not, I have no idea. I suspect there are other similar services out there.

By the way, it's a program that the domain hosting company has installed on their servers, and it's automatically included in all packages with them.
