My sister has just caught an emergency flight back to the mountain-town she lives in with her gorgeous 18-month old son. It was only the second time we've had her and my parents together for Christmas this decade - last year was the first.

A close friend of hers, a fit and healthy carpenter who was only 27 years old died of a heart attack while swimming in the lake. Apparently he was one of the best people, my parents loved him - he took my dad fishing and always liked talking to my parents. My sister and he were just friends, but he rented an apartment from her and always helped out whenever he could.

Virgin Blue have been fantastic about rearranging Sue's flight home.

In a crueler twist of fate, it looks like my sister's phone message leaving her condolences and offering help and a place to stay to his parents was their first indication that anything was wrong.

So it'll be a quiet Christmas this year, sans my sister and the best young nephew around - Even though I never met him, most of my family is in mourning for a guy who gave unstintingly and cared for all around.

Everyone called him Yeti, so if you're sending up prayers tonight, spare a thought for his family.

Thanks... no need for condolences for me, of course.... I still haven't quite got my head around it all - three years younger than me and a hell of a lot fitter.... just gone.... it's so strange.

Er, I meant "if you'd like to."

You're not limited to dropping me a line on a need-only basis. [Blushing]

Troubs, that is such sad news. So hard when you hear about families going through tragedies like this, so unexpected, at any time but worse I think in the holiday. It really does affect the way you remember and celebrate that occasion forever.

I still cannot get excited over my twins' birthday, because of my grandfather's death the day before they turned one. [Frown]

I will say a prayer for that family.

(Belle, I'm sorry. [Frown] )

Troubs, you and yours will be close in my heart for the next few days. What a grievous happening.

Thanks all for your support - on my part it's more concern for my sister who has enough on her plate without this...

But thank you all - and hope you had a great Christmas.
