Ick. Tell me what to do; if my first instinct makes me a jerk then I need to know.

My kids are going tonight to spend the holiday and weekend with their grandmother. She lives in New England, and usually makes it in 1-2 times a year. I e-mailed her a few days ago to try to make arrangements for the drop-off and didn't get a reply back till this morning. In her original e-mail, she asked how the kids normally got home on Sundays (she wanted to know if their dad drove them all the way back home). I replied back in my e-mail that we met halfway (an hour drive for each of us).

Anyway, her e-mail that she sent this morning basically said that plans had changed and she would need the kids picked up Saturday morning. Huh? I figured we were meeting halfway. I DON'T want to spend four hours of my day on Saturday doing this. I haven't been feeling that great, Hubby will be working so I'll have to make the drive by myself, and I have packing to do. So, am I an ass if when I see her tonight while dropping off the kids if I tell her that we really need to make arrangements to meet halfway? I feel bad because she sees the kids so little, but geez...it's just short notice and bad timing.

It kinda sucks for you, but do you think she's physically capable of making the halfway point by herself?

Honest question, since I've never met the woman personally.

I don't think your an ass, but I do think you should e-mail or preferrably call now and get it straightened out instead of waiting to tell her when you drop off the kids. Especially if you take them all the way there tonight, there is no reason she can't bring them half-way back. But still, it would be much better to get it resolved before the hand-off.

Yes, she could make the drive. It's a straight shot down the interstate. I'm ticked that we couldn't straighten this out before now. In my opinion, e-mailing me the day I'm dropping the kids off and expecting me to drive back up again 3 days later is kinda presumptuous. But, I'm trying to be understanding. However, I don't want to be so understanding that I ruin my Saturday. Not only is this time I'm spending, but also gas money for a trip out of state that I wasn't counting on.

Mack, she's from Connecticut.

edit: I think she's on a plane now, otherwise I would try to reach her.

Then tell her that - she can try and change plans at the last minute, but since that's creating more than a little inconvenience for you, it's only fair for you to try to make alternative arrangements.

Failing that, the kids can always stay home.

Yeah, ElJay has a good idea about straightening it out before you get all the way up there.
