This is a place to review items you have and give other jatraqueros either a thumbs up or thumbs down to help them make gift selections.

I will review the paraffin bath

This link is not to the exact one I have, but the concept is similar. You dip your hands (or feet) in hot wax.

I was skeptical, didn't really see the point. Yeah, so I'm sure the hot wax feels good on your skin for a moment, but really, couldn't I just soak my hands and feet in hot water for the same result?

Well, after getting one for my mother because she mentioned that she might like one, I have now confiscated it and moved it up to my bathroom. Mom didn't really like it all that much, though she still uses it occasionally and has free rein to go get it from my bathroom any time she wants to.

Let me tell you why I love it:

My nails and cuticles are in much better shape. I bite my nails and my cuticles are always a mess. No longer.

My skin is softer. That's one of the main benefits touted by the makers, but I've found it to be really true. Especially on my feet, I go barefoot a lot, and had really rough callused feet. They are now much nicer.

My wrist pain is reduced. I guess it's carpal tunnel, but I have really bad pain in my wrist, especially if I've been typing a lot. I use this every night, and have eliminated the need to take an otc pain reliever at night to alleviate the pain to the point that I can sleep.

It's just plain fun. You get to peel all the cooled wax off your skin - it's like all the fun of sunburn without the cancer risk. [Razz]

So, if you have a woman on your list, particularly one with arthritis or problems with carpal tunnel, I can recommend this as a good Christmas gift for her.

dkw gave me a Kirigami calendar for Christmas last year, and I love it. I took it to work with me, and every day I do the cut-out and post it on the big, blank, ugly wall beside my desk. Not only is it fun, but it really brightens up the place... many people have commented on how cheery it seems by my desk, and when my boss needed a new picture taken to put on our web site he asked to do it with my wall as a backdrop. When I'm done with the whole calendar, I'm gonna take a picture and show y'all how cool it is. [Big Grin]

I'd recommend this for someone who likes doing crafty things... some of the cut-outs are very intricate and require using an exacto knife. They could be frustrating for someone who doesn't like working with their hands or doing delicate work.

There's a calligraphy calendar on the site that looks interesting, too...

This game is not fun. Only give it as a gift if you have a tradition of giving joke gifts that no one could possibly like. Under no circumstances buy it for yourself. If you receive it as a gift, do not play it. Don't even bother opening it. Either throw it away, try to return/exchange it, or give it to someone you don't like.

How long does the paraffin you get with the paraffin soaker last, and how much are refills, Belle?

It can last a long time, because you can reuse the wax. That would only be recommended if nobody else uses the soaker, though.

Refills are available just about anywhere, and run 10-15 dollars. You can get it cheaper online.

I have refilled mine only once (had it months, not sure how many) and I didn't even need to use all of the refill pack. and I throw the old wax away, because my mother and I share the soaker.

I didn't change out all the wax - I just added some more when it began to get low. I could probably add the same amount four more times before I'd need to buy it again.
