I have a gmail account. This is a good thing. I can't sign into it on my home computer. (We use windows XP professional.) Every time I sign in, it refreshes the sign in page, like I've done nothing. I've reset my password about 700 times and it doesn't work. I've sent help email to the address they provide when I reset my password, and they tell me to sign in and click "help."

First of all, I can't sign in!

Second of all, when resetting my password lets me sign in to the general gmail area, there is NO (I repeat) NO "help" anywhere. I've rifled through everything and there's no help to be found. Just FAQ and testimonials and all that crap. After I'm signed in, I've clicked on 'gmail' and it just sends me back to the sign in page. I'm having major issues with it.

I've used it from other computers so I do have mail in there that I'd like to get to. I'm running on a pretty nice set up here and you'd think that it would support gmail. As far as I can tell, I've lowered the security/privacy settings on my browser as far as McAfee allows me to. [Mad]

Does anyone know how I could be helped?

It sounds like it could be your cookies. Go to internet options, privacy tab. What is it set at right now?

You can also add the site in question to an always allow cookies list. On the Privacy tab, click on Sites. Then add the URL and click on Allow. Click OK to close that dialogue box, then OK to close the next dialogue box, and try again.

Does that solve the problem? Let us know if it does or doesn't. Good luck!

(((quid)) Thanks for your help.

[Cry] I've tried all of that. The only site that I can really add to the always allow list is gmail.google.com. That doesn't take care of the crazy site it wants to go to when I sign in. [Frown] My cookies are set on "Low" right now.

*tries it on the lowest setting*

*cries again* It still doesn't work.

What else could it be?

I don't think you are actually signing in to gmail at all, I can see the Testimonials, and FAQ stuff too by going to Learn more about Gmail.
If you are in fact using Internet Explorer I do recommend that you download Mozilla Firefox, at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ I personally haven't ever had this type of problem with Firefox at Gmail. If you are still having problems, contact me on AIM or MSN. AIM: Raventh1 , MSN: raven_th1@hotmail.com . Note: don't send email to that account, I won't get it.

Do you have a cookie blocker or an anti-spyware program?

Thanks Annie. [Smile]

I do have spyware and a firewall (could that be a problem?) and all that jazz...but I haven't cleaned my cache. I'll have to try it.

So I'm pretty dumb, but is firefox a browser?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and offers to help. I'll try everything today and see what happens. (((folks in this thread)))

Yes, Firefox is a browser much like Internet Explorer, but it is developed by the open source community. This means if you wanted to you could look at exactly how it works, and you could modify it if you wanted to and had the understanding of how. I personally like this very much. Not to mention it's fast, and more secure than Internet Explorer.

Not dumb Narnia - just inexperienced in this particular field of knowledge.

Sorry, being hyper-correct this morning.

Any luck with the Gmail account?

Nope. I deleted all the cookies. (Do I have to restart the computer? I haven't tried that.)

I cleared the history, the cache and everything else I could find to clear.

I have a feeling that it's my virus scanner/firewall service. I'm wondering if it fiddles with the privacy/security settings on IE. [Frown] I can't figure it out.

but thanks for telling me I'm not dumb. [Smile]

What windows version are you using?

After you clear the cookies and the cache, shut the browser down and reload it.

What kind of antivirus are you using? The firewall shouldn't give you any problems with a web-based account.

-Trevor

Edit: You can also add Gmail to your list of authorized "safe" sites in IE.

I just thought of something, does it have anything to do with the fact that I don't have administrative privileges on this computer? Could the administrator have set something somewhere that would prevent me from accessing this site? (That administrator being my dad who doesn't trust my brothers since we got the nastiest hard drive infecting virus on here last summer. Funny thing is, they're smart enough to get around it most of the time...)

Hmmmm.

It shouldn't, but depending on what your father locked out, you may not be able to adjust the IE settings.

I can adjust them. I've got everything at the lowest setting possible. The privacy setting is "accept all cookies" and the security setting is "darn fricking low." [Wink]

*shrug* I guess I'll have to give up. [Frown] Thanks for helping you guys.

My firewall ruined my juno webmail access, too. It happened very suddenly after the firewall had some automatic update in November. Here is how they told me to fix it:

Privacy settings may be blocking some features that juno.com and junowebmail.com needs to work roperly, such as cookies, pop-ups and mobile code. Please disable the privacy features in Zone Alarm that are
blocking the pop-ups and cookies by opening Zone Alarm, click the Privacy Panel, Main Tab, drop all these settings to off, and test the site again.
Please understand by disabling the privacy settings, you are not disabling the firewall, it is only disabling the added feature of blocking cookies and advertisements.

It worked, although I shouldn't have had to do it that way.

That's what Trevor has been finding out as he tries to help me with this problem. (((Trevor))) It seems that it's the fault of my firewall. Actually, I don't want to have to turn off the privacy settings, an email server should work without me having to do that, don't you think? I guess it's a good thing that they're just beta testing, maybe they can fix this problem in the future.

Meanwhile, I'll try changing the settings to see if this really is the problem. Thanks everyone for your help!!

*sigh* still didn't work. I guess I'll just have to use gmail at school so I can keep the account open until I start working from a computer that lets me access. I really like the interface and the way it lets me manage mail...

alas, twas not to be. [Wink]
