So tell me about Dan Simmons everyone...Carrie seems to like his stuff. What do you like about him Carrie?

He's one of those authors whose books I see quite a bit and I've been curious. If there's good authors out there, I want to know it, but I don't want to read stuff without recommendations....

I've only read one of his books and I really liked it. I have the next book in the series out of the library, but finals are upon me.

[No No] Actually, it's one of the bones of the hip.

Dan Simmons is probably my favorite Scifi writer. The Hyperion series was awesome, and I consumed Illium while in a state of gelatinous extacy.

Illium refers to the city of Illium, the origin of the name Illiad. It's also known as Troy.

Truthfully, the only work of his I've read is Ilium. I've been meaning to get into the Hyperion series, especially since they look awesome and I've heard so many good things about them, but I'm guessing it'll wait until break. I should check the libraries here... Hmm...

Anyhow. Ilium. In case you didn't know, I'm a Classics major, wanting to focus on the end of the Aegean Bronze Age - otherwise known as the Trojan War. Because of this, I love any sort of adaptation/retelling/whatever of the Iliad. Books, movies, poems, music - anything goes.

Ilium seems to be a three-part story at first glance, but upon finishing the book, it's quite obviously all connected. It hooked me from the opening paragraph - the chapter that begins with the character near/in the Trojan War - and everything else just kept me going. I can't really express how much I love this book. It's smart, funny, sad, and tells a timeless tale.

It also got me into Shakespeare (again) and Proust, as well as reading three different translations of the Iliad. Read it! It's out in paperback now, too.
